2009 Week #17
1st Place Decepticons 165.25 pts
3rd Place BeaudoinBrothers 134.25 pts
5th Place WaxOnWaxOff 113.25 pts
8th Place FlyingElvis 72.5 pts
Congratulations to WaxOnWaxOff,
the 2009 PQBFL champions!
Wax won the league for the first time since 2001. It was a very nice comeback from the 2007 season finish (7th place out of 8), up to 3rd place last year, and now 1st. Wax was able to quickly rebuild a strong team.
The BeaudoinBrothers put up a
fight in the final week and Wax’s players were nervous and not on their A-game,
but the BBs came up just short. Wax should send flowers to JB for beating the
BBs by 3.75 pts otherwise the BBs would have completed another improbably
comeback. At the end, Wax won the title due to better coaching decisions than
Beaud, finishing first in the league compared to third for Beaud in coaching
efficiency. In the final week, Beaud could have won the title if they had
started the Cowboys defense instead of the Eagles defense. Also, Beaud benched
Mayo because of the fear the Patriots might not play their starters much, and
instead used 2 DLs by starting A Schobel. Unfortunately Schobel had his worst
game of the year with only 2 pts compared to Mayo’s 8 pts.
Wax escaped with the title by
doing just enough on Sunday. With R Moss on the bench, it was important for Wax
to get something out of T Owens and A Bryant and they both scored a TD despite
low stats, but every bit helped. The Vikings defense fixed their screw up from
last week when they could have sealed the title for Wax but dropped the ball on
MNF. This time the Vikings were solid and scored 15 pts. Wax also won this
year in part due to the TE position. Not only D Clark finished top TE in the
PQBFL, but Wax needed to use the backup this week due to the low expected usage
of Clark. Celek was a great late round pickup and he delivered on Sunday,
scoring 11.75 pts and he finished 5th best TE in the league.
This was sufficient to overcome the bad games
from MJD (6.25 pts), Flacco (3.25 pts), and C Wells (1.5 pt).
The Decepticons won for the
fourth time this season and for the third time in the last six weeks to secure 3rd
place in the standings in front of Spi. Dec completely outscored the opposition
with strong games from Cutler and J Stewart. With the second RB spot, Dec had
the guts to start J Charles instead of regular T Jones and it paid off. Charles
demolished the sorry Broncos by running for 259 yards and 2 TDs.
On defense it is worth noting the 22.5 pt performance by Ju Smith who sacked the
QB 3.5 times.
All other positions in the
rankings were already almost pre-determined, but JB’s trouble-making performance
was not in vain. By finishing 2nd, JB not only knocked out Beaud,
but also kicked UJ to the curb and edged UJ for 7th place in the
standings.
Since week #17 was worth 3x the
normal rate of beers for total points scored, the abysmal 62 pts scored by UJ
not only cost one rank in the standings, but cost more due to scoring 44% fewer
points than the league average of week #17, compared to only 7% worse than
average for the entire season.
Enjoy the NFL and PQBFL playoffs everybody and have a nice offseason.
Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
