2009 Week #08
2nd Place BeaudoinBrothers 154.25 pts
5th Place JakesBlues 127.5 pts
6th Place Decepticons 121.75 pts
7th Place WaxOnWaxOff 113.5 pts
8th Place FlyingElvis 109.75 pts
The Spitoons bounced back from
last place in week #7 to first place in week #8 .
The Spitoons have been the most erratic team in the league, finishing first or
last for half of the weeks so far. This win moved Spi back into 4th
place, only two rank-points away from second place. With Welker on bye (top WR
in the PQBFL so far), Spi did not expect so much success this week. However, R
Wayne (WR2 in the league) picked up the slack with 26.25 pts. Romo also did
well with 23.25 pts and after a slow start he has been coming back, now QB7 in
the league. However the most stunning contributor for Spi has been rookie LB
Brian Cushing, who continues to do everything. This week he got 3 tackles, 7
assists, 1 sack, and one INT. His lead as the top of his position over the
second best is one of the highest of all positions.
The BeaudoinBrothers had a
strong second place finish this week and took advantage of Wax+Dec’s struggles
to jump to a six rank-point lead in the standings .
This season so far, every time a team got a big lead in first place (Wax 4
rank-point lead after week 4, Dec 5 rank-point lead after week 6), they were
promptly knocked out by horrible performances the following week. We’ll see if
the BBs can buck the trend this time around. Because the BBs had all their key
bye weeks lumped in only two weeks earlier this year, and because they tend to
have better backups than other teams, they can expect to have relative success
in weeks #9-10, but might go back to middle of the pack afterwards since their
starters are not significantly better than other teams in the league except for
UJ and JB. In week #8, Beaud started the wrong QB (Schaub 5.25 pts vs benched
McNabb 26.25 pts), but received strong contribution for all 4 RBs and WRs who
scored at least 14.5 pts each. Even the Dallas defense which had been average
at best so far scored 14.5 pts, even better than the PQBFL’s top defense from
the Eagles who were benched and scored 7 pts. Rookie L McCoy took advantage of
the injury to Westbrook and scored a long TD and 15.5 pts. The BBs have been
relatively unaffected by injuries so far, ranking 6th in injury
points, and even benefited from injuries from time to time, like for L McCoy.
OldNo7 finished in the top three
for the third time in five weeks and has a chance for the team’s best season in
franchise history. Old is 6th in the standings, but only 3
rank-points away from second place. Who would have thought that Old could ever
get their team name on the PQBFL plaque? Well
it’s only mid-season, but second is within reach. Old had a chance to finish 2nd
this week, but got caught from behind by Beaud on MNF when M Ryan, R White, and
Shockey combined for a respectable 36 pts but the BBs got 28.5 pts from Turner
and Vilma which was much more than expected compared to their season average of
18 pts together. Old’s success this week was in part due to franchise player S
Jackson playing the hapless Lions and scored 20.75 pts when the Rams rode him
all day long and avoided the pass. Old’s strength this year has been the DL
position, and week #8 was a perfect display of that. Both J Allen and Ju
Peppers started and combined for a stunning 38 pts on Allen’s three sacks and Ju
Peppers’ INT returned for a TD. Not bad when the league’s average for a DL is
about 7-8 pts per game.
The Dugongs had a seventh
straight average week, finishing 4th. One can only guess that this
team is doomed for mediocrity in 2009. Dug was hurt by bye weeks this week with
both PIT and TB being off. WR Bowe was also on bye, and old man Holt had to
start and he barely showed up, scoring 2.75 pts. This squandered the big game
by A Rodgers who scored 31.75 pts. Believe it or not, the top scoring player in
the PQBFL so far is not Brees, Brady, or Manning. It’s A Rodgers. Also note
the continued steady work put in by C Lofton at LB who added 12 tackles and 2
assists on MNF. Finally, RB Kevin Smith might have become the first offensive
player in PQBFL history to score points for a safety when he tackled a defender
in his end zone after a turnover.
The JakesBlues finished fifth
this week, but lost ground to the three teams directly above in the standings:
Spi, Dug, and Old. JB is now 10 rank-points away from 6th place and
seems locked in the bottom third. Brees did not do enough on MNF to beat Dug,
throwing 2 TDs but being victim of 2 turnovers as well
. JB got TD production from R Rice, G
Jennings, P Crayton, and Maclin for a total of 6 TDs which is normally quite
good, but on defense, JB only got 27.5 pts from the defensive team (GB) and the
four individual starters.
The Decepticons expected a rough
week due to not having a TE to start and got a disappointing finish with 6th
place. College QB Potts did not help, being benched after only a few snaps,
throwing for 94 yds and one INT. The same treatment was reserved to RB Slaton.
One carry, one rushing yard, one fumble, and hello bench. Slaton did not return
to the game. This is unfortunate because the Bears
D pulled their weight, crushing the Browns, scoring a TD and causing 5 turnovers
in addition to blocking a kick.
WaxOnWaxOff finished in the
bottom three for the third time in four weeks with a 7th place.
Wax’s lack of depth has been exposed during bye weeks. R Moss was on bye, and
Hixon replaced him (!) and scored minus two points
. Parker and Mendenhall were on bye, and M
Lynch scored 4 pts. L Fletcher was on bye, and Rhodes scored one point.
Franchise player MJD is pretty much the only guy who showed up this week,
scoring 31.25 pts. Even the Vikings defense was not impressive in Green Bay,
only scoring one point.

UncleJack’s players suck
. As if this was not enough, UncleJack’s
coach sucks
. He benched first round pick
Chris Johnson again, and the dude scored 35.75 pts
. This was a flashback of week #2 when CJ
scored 47.5 pts on the bench
. But the sad
thing is who replaced CJ in the starting lineup this week: Leon Washington. Not
only is this guy out for the year due to an injury, but it was also mentioned in
last week’s summary
. I guess we should
assume UJ does not read this column. Maybe UJ would learn a thing or two? UJ…
suckness!
