2008 Week #5
1st Place BeaudoinBrothers 199.5 pts
9th Place JakesBlues 90.75 pts
The BeaudoinBrothers crushed the
competition by more than 40 pts this week. The BBs almost got 200 pts which
would have been the first time this plateau was reached since 2006 week 13 when
the BBs scored 208.5 pts. The record is still being held by the Spitoons with
217.5 pts in 2005 week 3 when Spi exploded for 14 TDs. This week you knew
something was in the air when on Saturday, college QB G Harrell scored 7 TDs and
threw for over 450 yds (and no INT) on the road against Kansas State. The
flurry of TDs continued on Sunday: Turner, R Moss, L Fitz (2), Witten, Slaton
(2). Then on Sunday night Roeth added three more and the Jax defense also
scored one. To cap this wild week, A Winfield returned a block FG for a TD on
Monday night for a total of 12 TDs excluding Harrell
. The BBs took over first place in the
standings – one rank-point in front of Wax. The challenge for the BBs will be
to follow up their first place with a good week #6. So far this season, weekly
winners struggled the following week. Old won week #4 and had the best
subsequent result with a 4th place this week. However Old had a very
low score and could have easily finished 7th so this week was hardly
a good week for Old. Other weekly winners finished 6th at best the
following week.
The Decepticons recovered from
their dismal week 3-4 performances with a second place. Dec was keeping up with
the BBs until Sunday night when they got smoked. Dec got good production from B
Jacobs with 22 pts and the team’s receivers. A Johnson finally scored his first
TD of the year, R Wayne scored the game-winning TD for the Colts, and Cooley
caught a TD on a trick play against the Eagles. Cooley’s 8 receptions and over
100 yds were critical in the win because S Moss did not get a single catch.
Winslow Jr being the regular starting TE for Dec, this might have been Cooley’s
only game of the season and Dec’s coach was very satisfied of the results
. With D Harris and K Morrison on bye, Beason was
sorely needed at LB and he did well with 12 pts. The Pats defense had 2 weeks
to prepare for their matchup against the 49ers and they did show some
improvement following the Miami game debacle. They got 3 INTs and held the
49ers to under 200 yds of total offense. With the second place, Dec moves up to
6th place in the standings and is only 1 rank-point from 4th
place.
The Spitoons continue being the
most consistent team in the PQBFL and finished 3rd. After five
weeks, Spi have two third place finishes and three fifth place finishes. Spi is
the only team not to visit the bottom half of the standings so far this year.
Spi increased their lead over fourth place and distanced the top 3 teams in the
PQBFL a bit from the rest of the pack. Especially since the trade with Wax that
landed Spi T Gonzalez and P Willis, it looks like Spi will compete until the
very end and they are hoping to fly under the radar for a while and possibly get
a late season surge for the league championship. Surviving the bye weeks will
be critical for Spi because the team does not have much depth at WR and even
less so at the RB position. If Westbrook was to miss extended time, Spi will
struggle to keep up. This week, P Willis was the team leader with 22 pts.
Willis was all over the field with 14 tackles, 4 assists, one sack and one QB
hit . Reggie Bush scored 2 TDs on punt
returns on MNF which were almost enough to come back and beat Dec. However Bush
only rushed for 29 yds which was a big problem. Romo also had a big game but
playing against the Bengals, the expectations were already quite high. Rookie K
Rivers scored 11 pts in that game against Dallas with one INT and one forced
fumble. Rivers is currently the top ranked defensive rookie (10th
best rookie overall).
OldNo7 had an off week with only
119.5 pts, down from 178 pts last week but that was enough for 4th
place, barely beating Wax, FE, and Dug. Old only had three performers this
week: E Manning scored 21.75 pts despite missing P Burress, the Bears crushed
the Lions and scored 20 pts, and rookie Hightower continues to upset E James and
scored 2 TDs. Hightower is ranked 8th best rookie and his average of
8.5 pts per game is barely behind E James at 9.8 pts per game. The rest of
Old’s lineup was dreadful. Old did have critical players on bye, for example S
Jackson, B Edwards, and Shockey / Bolding are injured. But regular starter LJ
was awful with only 2 yds from scrimmage .
Backup RBs / WRs S Young, D Bowe, and A Gonzalez did not do well with a combined
12 pts. Backup TE Utecht only scored 2 pts. The standings are so close that
despite the so-so performance, Old moves from 7th place in the
standings to 4th place.
Wax finished in the middle of
the pack this week with only 116 pts. Wax could have been crushed this week if
other teams had not struggled as much. Newly acquired QB Rivers disappointed
with only 11.25 pts against the Dolphins. Rivers is still ranked QB2 in the
league, but more is expected of him . Wax’s
RBs were bad this week. MJD did score a short TD but only had 7 rushing yds and
30 total yards. M Lynch was held to 65 total yds and no TD. WRs T Owens and
Jennings each scored a TD, but they did not have great stats, catching only 6
balls together. TE D Lee had an unexpected good game with 10.25 pts in a rare
start. DL Mario Williams had a good game with 13 pts and currently ranks DL2 in
the league. He has clearly established himself as a top lineman. Rookie
Meacham had the opportunity on MNF to beat Old but he fell flat with only 2
receptions for 31 yds. On the bench, Chris Johnson was not much better with 48
total yds and no TD.
When FE is not getting bailed
out by WR B Marshall, they struggle to get any traction. Marshall only caught
three short passes and did not score a TD. Only M Ryan and C Tillman had good
games for FE this week. Ryan scored 16.5 pts in Green Bay in a surprising win
over the Packers. Ryan ranks 7th best rookie so far. DB Tillman was
questionable with a shoulder injury but he showed no ill effects against the
Lions with 1 INT, 4 passes defended, and one TD in that game. As if FE did not
have enough injuries, C Chambers started this week with Colston and K Curtis
still sidelines, but Chambers got hurt after scoring a TD
. It is not clear at this point if Chambers
will become FE’s third casualty at the WR position. At RB, the FE coach made a
late change to bench W McGahee. That was a good call because McGahee only
scored 5.5 pts. However the coach went with FatDale White who got 4 total yards
and no TD. On the bench was DeAngelo Williams who scored 3 TDs against the
shitty Chiefs. DW has been a nice surprise this season and will probably see
some time in FE’s starting lineup soon.
The Dugongs went nowhere this
week again with only 111.25 pts. If it was not for Dugongs’ win in week #2, the
team would not even be close to the league leaders. Dug dropped to 7th
place in the standings. WR TJ Housh did have a good game with 23.25 pts, and
rookie Forte added 2 more TDs and continues to lead all rookies in the PQBFL.
However Dug’s coach benched A Rodgers in fear that he would be limited due to
his injury. That proved not to be the case with Rodgers scoring 27.5 pts on the
bench. Backup QB Kitna started for Dug and got only 0.25 pts. Kitna only threw
for 74 passing yards before getting benched. It’s a safe bet to say that Kitna
will not start any time soon for Dug . The
Lions look like they are possibly one of the worst teams in the history of the
NFL. They had two weeks to prepare for the Bears in a home game and they
normally have success against the Bears. But they got outplayed from start to
finish and had no positive signs to show for in that game. Just crap from A to
Z! Too bad Dug drafted Kitna, Roy Williams, and rookie RB Kevin Smith
. It’s safe to say those guys will not help Dug
too much during the postseason.
UJ finished in the bottom three
for the third straight week with only 95.5 pts .
Injuries, bye weeks, underperformance, you name it, UJ’s got it all this week.
P Manning just does not have it in 2008. He was lucky to come out of his game
as a winner in Houston. If not for Rosenfeld’s stupidity, P Manning would not
even had the opportunity to throw the last minute TD. E Graham only scored 6.5
pts and Buckhalter got the goose egg. Turns out Westbrook was not so injured
this week. Calvin Johnson at WR is another Detroit disaster. Two receptions
for 16 yds this week. The only good thing to say about UJ this week is that
college RB D Fletcher rushed for 260 yds. However he only got 1 TD so that
resulted in 6.75 pts – not enough to carry the team. He might hold some value
in 2009 if he is drafted by the right NFL team however.
JakesBlues have long been
predicted to struggle but had held up strong through 4 weeks. Week #5 was not a
pretty sight however and JB dropped from tied in 4th place in the
standings to 8th place after this week and is being eaten alive by
the competition . D Brees was supposed to take
over Brady as the league’s best QB but it does not look like he is ready, at
least not based on this week. Brees only threw for 1 TD and had 2 INTs, one
lost fumble, and two fumbles not lost. He needs Colston and Shockey back to
health. Addai and E James were ok but not great, with 11 pts and 11.5 pts,
respectively. Chad Johnson is a mess and scored only 5 pts. He ranks 39th
in the PQBFL and he should pay more attention to opposing defenses than legal
requirements to change our last name
. A
Gates only caught one ball against the Dolphins and dropped to 5th
best TE in the league. JB was very bad on defense this week. J Allen scored
5.5 pts, and teammates Tatupu, Trufant, and T Suggs could not do better with 5
pts, 5 pts, and 3 pts.
Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
