2006 Week #5
2nd Place FlyingElvis 130.5 pts
5th Place BeaudoinBrothers 112 pts
If you would like to volunteer to write one or a few weekly summaries some time this season, please let me know.
The Decepticons exploded out of
last place to get their first win of the season with 132 pts. McNabb was once
again the unquestioned leader of the team with 29.5 pts. His worst game of the
year so far has been 19.5 pts which is more than the average of the 2nd
best QB in the PQBFL (E Manning - Wax - average 19.3 pts). McNabb leads all QBs
and all players in the league by almost nine points per game on average. He is
by far the MVP of the first quarter of the season. The Eagles D also had a big
game with 20.5 pts against the Cowboys. They sacked statue Bledsoe 7 times,
intercepted him 3 times, not mentioning recovering a fumble by the statue. One
of the INTs went the distance for a TD. For the first time of the year, the
Cons got a decent game out of their rookie. V Young scored 8.5 pts against the
Colts. At WR, the coach made the critical decision of starting J Walker instead
of newly acquired Chambers and it paid off because Walker scored 9 pts compared
to Chambers’ 7 pts. Those two points were the difference between a win this
week or a 2nd place.
FlyingElvis continues to be the
hottest team in the league with a 2nd place
. FE was last after two weeks and the team
has now moved up to 2nd place in the standings, only three
rank-points behind Wax. They were 12 rank-points behind Wax after two weeks so
they have cut 9 rank-points in three weeks. The Jaguars were the top scorer for
FE this week by crushing the Jets 41-0, allowing less than 200 yds, getting 4
turnovers, 6 sacks, and even blocking a kick. Rookie M Leinart took advantage
of being named the starting QB of the Cards and he scored 18 pts in his first
start. He could be very important for FE in the championship run. The FE coach
normally prefers to give the nod to Brady due to his love for the Patriots, but
he unexplicably went with Favre this week. This decision cost the team the
first place because Brady beat Favre by 3.5 pts (15.5 to 12). Favre only had
one TD against the Rams defense which was somewhat surprising. FE finished 2nd
despite sub-par games by S Smith and Portis. FE is almost the new favorite
to win in 2006. The only thing holding back the Vegas linemakers is the
fact that FE trails Wax in the standings by a reasonable margin. Beware of
this team.
WaxOnWaxOff reclaimed first
place but should consider themselves very lucky to finish as high as 3rd
with only 115 pts this week. Less than 7 pts separated 3rd from 6th
this week and Wax came out on top. Things are really going Wax’s way this
season. A third place finish was welcome this week especially because franchise
player Rudi Johnson was on bye. D McAllister continued to surprise with 17.5
pts against the Bucs D. He is now the 10th best RB in the league –
not bad for someone who is supposed to be backup to a rookie on his own team
. The big play that moved Wax from 6th
to 3rd place was Reggie Brown’s 40-yard TD reception late in the
game. That gave Wax 11 pts just on that play. Wax’s 3rd place is
even more satisfying considering that the team played without a DL this week,
and L Maroney had his worst game of the year with only 3 pts. So Wax continues
to lead the league but still looks shaky in some areas. However every team has
some problems – Wax seems to have fewer problems and find a way to get by.
However Wax has to be very wary of FE because their team looks better on paper.
OldNo7 finished in the top half
for the fourth straight week with 113 pts, barely below Wax but in front of the
BBs. F Taylor had to start while W Dunn was on bye week and Taylor did well
with 17.5 pts. In fact, Taylor has done better than Dunn anyway this season so
far with an average of 9.9 vs 7.8 for Dunn .
QB Kitna threw for 2 TDs but was victim of 4 turnovers. A Johnson was on bye
week and the coach screwed up by sending B Lloyd in the game
. Lloyd did nothing at all while backups Mason
and S Parker scored 5 and 12 pts respectively. This cost Old the third place.
First round pick R Bush was benched again and this time it was a mistake. Bush
scored his first TD and got 15 pts while Addai was held to only 6 pts. On
defense, Ju Peppers has been unstoppable this season and he got his fourth
straight double-digit game with 13.5 pts. Both Old’s LBs also got double-digit
scores with 12 pts and 10.5 pts from Bulluck and Briggs. Old’s four defensive
starters scored 40 pts in total, the best score of the week. Old now has 25
rank-points in the standings, tied with the Spitoons in 3rd place.
The BeaudoinBrothers got another
below average game with a 5th place and 112 pts, their worst score of
the year. Last year, the BBs scored less than 129.5 pts only once, and this
season, the BBs have not beat that score once in five weeks. Last year, the BBs
finished out of the top 2 only twice in 17 weeks. This year they have not
been in the top 2 yet. Everything is going wrong for the BBs. This week,
two players got injured early in their game: D Bennett and M Peterson. They
scored a total of 2 pts and this cost the team 2 precious rank points,
especially against key opponents like Old and Wax. Franchise player LT was in
charge for securing 3rd place this week on Sunday Night, but he only
scored 5.5 pts – his worst game of the year. He did not score a TD for the
second straight week. The BBs four defensive starters were the worst group
again this week with only 19.5 pts. Peterson is now out for the year so things
are not expected to improve on that front. In four starts this season, the
Bears D were the BBs best scorer twice and second best twice
. The Bears squashed the Bills this week and the
only reason they did not get a shutout is because stupid loser B Griese fumbled
the snap with less than 3 minutes in the game and gave the Bills good field
position. The Bears D only allowed 145 yds in the game and caused 5 turnovers.
They are now the top defense in the PQBFL. Note that despite struggling in
5th place so far this year, the BBs have not finished 7th or 8th so far,
something that even league leaders Wax, FE, and Spi have not been able to avoid.
The BBs have been a model of consistency in the last few years. They have
not finished last for a league-record 54 straight weeks (dating back to 2003
week #2) and they have not been in the red (bottom 2) for 24 straight weeks (dating
back to 2004 week #15). Those two records will be very tough to beat in
the future.
UncleJack got the short end of
the stick in a log jam between 3rd and 6th place. Only 7
more points would have been a difference of three rank-points for UJ. P Manning
scored 14 pts this week – not bad, but far more was expected at home against the
Titans . The Colts almost lost the game.
Boldin was the top scorer for UJ with 16.5 pts. RB W Parker started fast on
Sunday Night with 10.5 pts in the first half, but he only scored 1 pt in the
entire 2nd half to kill UJ’s hopes
.
WR Muhammad only scored 2.5 pts even though the Bears offense scored 40 pts –
unbelievable. For the Colts, not only did P Manning disappoint, but the Colts D
only scored 7.5 pts and R Mathis 5 pts. Other than Mathis, the rest of the
defense did well however. L Fletcher, N Barnett, and A Rolle combined for 32
pts. UJ was hurt this week by the absence of starter J Norwood who was on
bye. Sheffler started and only scored one point. With the Decepticons' strong performance this week, UJ is in danger of
falling to 7th place in the standings.
The Spitoons struggled to a 7th
place for the second straight week. The team has been crippled by S Alexander’s
injury . Backup C Dillon only scored 3.5
pts. The other starting RB Westbrook is not very healthy either, and scored 9
pts. He still leads all RBs in the league however with 17.9 pts per week on
average. The Spitoons were affected by C Palmer being on bye week and Culpepper
being injured. Backup Roethlisberger was awful and only scored one point.
Well, after consideration, Roethlisberger was great, because one point was his
best game of the season
. He scored -1.5 pts
and -2.5 pts in weeks #2 and #3 so it was the first time he was in positive
territory this season. His average remains negative however, and A Brooks is
the only other player to have this accomplishment so far. WR T Owens was
expected to explode in Philly but he fizzled with only 6 pts to the great
pleasure of the crowd. One of the few good news for the Spitoons is that TE
Winslow Jr led the team with 11.5 pts this week and he is quietly sitting at the
top of the TE rankings in the PQBFL with 11.3 pts per game, more than 2 pts
better than T Heap (Dug).
The Dugongs finished last for
the second straight week and this team is a wreck
. The Dugongs only scored 96 pts,
the lowest total of the season for any team. Star WR Larry Fitzgerald got
injured and will be out for a while. With Warner now being benched in favor of
Leinart, the Dugongs were forced to start C Frye at Carolina. The result was
predictable: only 173 passing yds and three turnovers, for -2.5 pts
. It is almost impossible to win in the PQBFL
without a decent QB. The first pick overall in the 2006 draft Ronnie Brown only
scored 6 pts and dropped to 16th RB in the league. L Coles had been
hot this year but only scored 3.5 pts this week – the first time of the year
that he does not get double-digits. One of the rare positive signs for the
Dugongs this year has been the performance of F Gore. He scored 14 pts this
week to bounce back from two bad weeks in weeks #3-4. He is the 8th
best RB in the league. As a late 6th round pick, he has far exceeded
expectations. With a coaching efficiency of 73.8% this week, the only team not
to reach 82%, the Dugongs fell to last place in that category. The Dugongs are
7th overall in strength of starters so chances are very slim that the
Dugongs can come back and compete this year. The Dugongs got slammed by the
Vegas linemakers.
Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
