Week #9

The Admirals crushed WaxOnWaxOff this week and took a commanding 5 rank-point lead in the standings despite Wax having won the previous two weeks.  Adm has now finished in the top 3 for five straight weeks and has not finished lower than 5th which happened all the way back in week #3.  The team is showing no sign of slowing down, are first in strength of starters, and have relatively few injuries, so they are now the clear favorites to win this season after 5 years in the PQBFL without finishing in the top half of the standings.  This week Adm became the first team to crack 200 pts this year and sailed to an easy win despite scoring zero from the rookie position.  The team leader was D Hunter with 31.5 pts thanks to a TD return off a fumble by Stafford, in addition to sacking him 3.5 times.  Since Adm also started the Vikings defense, that TD counted twice and the Vikings’ 10 sacks contributed to 22 pts from the D.  Offense was just as fine for Adm, with Olsen scoring 15.75 pts with Ebron on bye, M Thomas exploding for 12-211 and a long TD, Hopkins also catching double-digit receptions and a TD, and even James White outscored Gurley as White is making the most of injuries to S Michel (Old) and Burkhead (Dec).

The Decepticons finished second for back-to-back weeks and is now tied with Wax in second place.  As usual, the trio of Mahomes (31 pts), Kamara (26.5 pts), and McCaffrey (23 pts) did most of the damage.  Given that Adm had such a huge week, it would not have mattered anyway, but it should be noted that at other positions Dec is starting to be affected by injuries, for example Diggs missed this week and AJ Green was on bye (in addition to being injured) which meant that reject D Parker started and only scored 1.25 pt, below his own ridiculously low average of 3.0 pts per game which is lowest of all WRs in the PQBFL.  At TE, Eifert’s injury continues to hurt although this week technically the Bengals were on bye, but anyway K Rudolph does not have the same connection with Cousins than he did with lesser Vikings QBs in the past.  Rudolph scored 4.25 pts and is languishing as the 14th best TE in the PQBFL.  On defense, Wagner has generally been a disappointment this season but at least he scored 18.5 pts this week, the first time that he scores more than 10 pts all year.  This made up for LB J Davis who unlike Wagner scored above 10 pts four times this year, but this week he stunk with only a single point.

The GloriousBastards scored a respectable 159.5 pts but that was only good enough for 3rd place this week.  Bas still has quite a bit of work to do to catch up with Dec and Wax in second place but given the team’s performance in the last 5 weeks, it is doable given that Bas outscored Wax 32-28 and Dec 32-22 in terms of rank-points during this period.  This week Bas could have finished 2nd and ahead of Dec if the coach had started Goff instead of Brady.  Brady underperformed relative to his weekly projection with 17.75 pts and it could have been far worse if not for a late bomb to J Gordon (Ball), while Goff scored 32.25 pts on the bench.  K Hunt was the engine this week with a season-high 30.75 pts which was the 4th time in the last 6 weeks that he scored more than 19 pts, the lowest during that time span being 12.75 pts which is better than the average of all but 6 other RBs in the PQBFL.  Unfortunately co-RB E Elliott could not do as well and was limited to 9.25 pts on MNF.  Rookie Mayfield scored a decent 17.75 pts in a losing effort against the Chiefs and he has been slowing climbing the rookie rankings, now he’s 5th best.  Defense was not very good for Bas this week with everybody scoring 8 pts or below, particularly Cameron Jordan who only scored 2 pts.

OldNo7 finished in no-man’s land 4th place, far behind Bas in 3rd and far ahead Beaud in 5th place.  M Ryan scored 36.5 pts in a destruction of the Skins defense.  Franchise player M Gordon outscored his weekly projection with 17.25 pts against the tough Texans defense (Bas) but it was below his season average of 18.9 pts per week.  For the second RB, Old started McCoy against the Bears defense which was a surprising move given that D Freeman is injured and T Coleman is getting a good chunk of the Falcons’ offense.  Perhaps the coach wanted to minimize risk and not start both the Falcons QB and RB but this did not turn out well because Coleman outscored McCoy 26 to 2.25 pts.  At WR Old no longer benefited from an explosive performance by Thielen who only caught 4 short passes, but fortunately one of them was a TD so Thielen scored double-digits anyway.  Also A Cooper did well in his debut in Dallas instead of Oakland’s hell hole, with 5-58 and a TD.  At TE, Kelce had a big game with 2 TDs and 23.75 pts and overtook Ertz (Beaud) as the top TE in the PQBFL by a small edge of 0.3 pt per game average.

The BeaudoinBrothers came close but avoided the cellar this week again, thanks to a 16-pt performance by Dion Lewis on MNF to edge FE, Wax, and Ball on the last game.  The acquisition of RB Alex Collins was not earth shattering but for a second straight week made a difference given all injuries at the RB position.  Collins’ 8.25 pts this week was the key to beat the Ballers.  However for the second straight week Beaud were missing a defensive player due to injuries.  It’s not very common that we can see a team not able to field a healthy defensive flex because they are out of active players at any position on defense, but that was the case for Beaud this week.  At least the three starters Ingram L David and T White did ok, scoring between 8 pts and 10.5 pts.  Ji Graham also did well during Ertz’s bye with 12.75 pts, but the same cannot be said of Stafford who sucked big time with only 4 pts while A Luck was on bye.  At WR J Landry did not do much, but for once K Allen was able to catch some balls, despite not scoring a TD and he finished with 13.5 pts.

The Ballers finished in the bottom half of the standings for the 6th straight week but beat FE by 2 rank points to move a bit further ahead and will look to try to avoid last place this year as an expansion team.  Ball now leads FE by 6 rank-points in the standings.  The Ballers were in a dead heat with Beaud on MNF each team with a Titans RB left, but D Henry was smoked by D Lewis.  Henry scored a short TD but only got 32 yards from scrimmage.  The other Ballers’ starting RB Breida has slowed down significantly in the last 3 weeks with only 6.5 pts total during this period, a score that he had exceeded each individual week prior to that except in week #1.  At WR Ju Jones finally scored a TD after a long drought, so it sounds like he knows where the end zone is after all.  However with ODB on bye, backup K Golladay had to start and he was held to 3 catches and no TD.  The coach made a few mistakes with defensive players, starting C Campbell on bye and Z Cunningham injured, which proved costly against Beaud.  Also DB Ju Simmons sucked with only one point.  The only positive this week on defense was the dominating performance of the Bears against the sorry Bills, scoring 2 TDs and ending the week with 28 pts.

After flexing their muscles for the previous two weeks, the defending champs got crushed almost as much as in week #4, this time finishing 7th and took a major setback on their way to a repeat of the PQBFL championship.  If it was not for FE’s ineptitude, Wax would have been last once again.  Some on Wax’s squad did just enough to avoid last, for example A Rodgers threw for 2 TDs, Jo Howard scored 2 TDs, and A Brown caught a short TD and finished with 12 pts.  But otherwise it was a bad day at the office for Wax.  Some key players were on bye and Wax does not have the depth to replace them properly.  For example, Mixon was on bye and C Carson only scored 3.25 in his absence.  TE Doyle was on bye and Hooper only scored 5 pts.  Similar story for star rookie LB D Leonard who was on bye and backup A Miller did better than his weekly projection with 7.75 pts but nowhere near production offered by Leonard who has not scored less than 10 pts and that was week #1.  On defense the Rams started in New Orleans, what was the coach thinking?  The Bills were benched and their 5 pts were far better than the Rams’ negative 2.5 pts.

FlyingElvis finished last for the third straight week and for the fourth time of the season, and this time it was not because the coach started guys on bye or injured.  The team never had a chance this week.  Gronk was out to injury, backup D Walker is out for the year, and Brate is only TE2 on his own team so who can expect him to score more than 3.75 pts?  L Bell is still at home while Conner is lighting up the scoreboard, D Freeman is injured, T Montgomery was traded and not in uniform, so it was left to Drake and D Johnson Jr.  Drake had a strong 4-week run between weeks 5-8 but he returned to suckness this week with only 3 rushes for 9 yards against the Jets while old man Gore carried the rock 20 times and could not crack 3 yards per carry.  C Kupp came back from injury and did well with 17.25 pts but Ty Hill had a down day with only 8.25 pts.  Barkley has been one of the few bright spots for FE this year but he was on bye this week and backup R Jones was injured – awful timing.  This is a season to forget for FE but if some guys come back to health and if L Bell shows up, FE has the goods to disturb the top of the standings once in a while.
