Week #5

FlyingElvis won for the first time since week #10 last year and jumped back in the thick of the race, only 2 rank-points from first place.  This win was particularly impressive given that QB Carr was injured and Cousins was on bye.  Starter T Taylor did not get the job done in Cincy and only scored 8.75 pts.  Also college starter Nick Fitzgerald was on bye which was a drag for FE.  FE pulled off the win with WRs and defense.  AJ Green scored a long TD against the tough Bills defense and finished the game with 21.25 pts.  Hopkins did even better on SNF with 23.5 pts, catching only 4 passes but 3 of them were TDs in garbage time.  However the main highlight was the strength of the defense.  Bosa sacked E Manning twice and forced one fumble.  Telvin Smith and Barry Church each scored a TD on the Jaguars defense.  Just imagine if FE had started the Jags defense, then those TDs would have counted as 4 for FE, but unfortunately the Jags were benched in favor of the Raiders which was a bad move (25.5 pts for Jax vs 0.5 pt for Oak) but had no consequence for the rankings this week.

The BeaudoinBrothers finished second for the third straight week and have now moved to the top of the standings without a single win.  The Bros finished less than 2 pts behind FE in a close race, with much of their scoring being in garbage time on SNF similar to FE.  D Watson threw for 4 TD passes in the last 18 minutes of the game and 5 TDs in total.  We have to give him credit for taking what the Chiefs defense gave him late in the game, but given how he could not move the offense in the first half, his performace comes with question marks.  That does not change the fact that he finished the game with a stunning 44 pts against a good defense.  At the very least he avoided turnovers and he even made a bone crushing tackle to save a TD after a fumble by his RB.  After 5 weeks not only has he taken over K Hunt (Adm) as the top rookie despite not being the starter in week #1, but also he how leads all players in the PQBFL at all positions, ahead of T Brady.  Numbers do not lie.  Beaud missed out on first place because kicker Bryant and the Broncos defense were on bye and backups Crosby (-2 pts) and the Cards (-2 pts) did worse than the counterparts who were not playing at all.

OldNo7 finished a respectable 3rd and moved closer to first place due to Adm's woes.  However it will be difficult for Old to stay in the race without a viable rookie now that D Cook is out for the year.  Backup Engram got the goose egg this week and on the bench J Peppers only scored 2 pts.  Old was without a kicker this week like many other teams but for Old it was due to Janikowski's injury.  Old was able to get decent scoring on the board thanks to Newton's 3 TD and 350+ passing yard win in Detroit, and with M Gordon's 2 TDs on top of 160+ yds from scrimmage against the Giants.  Kelce also had a big first half with 8-98 before getting his bell rung and a concussion.  On defense, Old  started injured O Vernon so Old should consider themselves lucky to escape with 3rd place despite three players in the starting lineup getting a zero.

WaxOnWaxOff finished in the middle of a tight pack from 3rd to 5th, just behind Old and a bit in front of Dec.  Wax has not been able to maximize performance this year and are in 5th place in the standings despite scoring a total of 696 pts which is very close to league leading Beaud at 711 total points.  This means Wax remains a team to watch and is also indicated by strength of starters 3rd in the league, a hair behind Adm and very close to Beaud too.  Starting the right QB has been a welcome change recently as Wax did it again this week with Stafford scoring 15.5 pts against Carolina.  However it should be noted that before his 2 TDs in the last 5 minutes of the game, Stafford was not doing anything at all.  Wax benched R Wilson which was a good call because Wilson only scored a short TD against the Rams.  And benching Roeth despite Big Ben playing at home saved a big headache of -4.75 pts with Roeth throwing 5 INTs and no TD toilet

The Decepticons' disappointing season continues with 5th place this week and the team being left in the dust behind the close pack in the standings Beaud-Adm-FE-Old-Wax.  It might very well be between Dec and Bas for last place unless something changes.  And to make matters worse, JJ Watt got hurt and he is now out for the year.  Watt was taken in the 5th round so no help is on the way for Dec because Watt is not even eligible for the injured player rule.  The season is going to the crapper already and Dec might start thinking about next year, being already 10 rank-points behind first place and having so many other teams to overcome.  Dec did not necessarily expect a great week due to not having a kicker and because both Ju Jones and M Thomas were on bye.  TY Hilton was fine as a backup with 15.75 pts but Parker was not with only 1.25 pt.  A Rodgers did the job once again with 27.75 pts but it's simply not enough particularly with holes at RB where D Murray was held to 2.25 pts and L Miller 7.25 pts.

The Admirals have been knocked off their pedestal and things are going downhill fast after a fast three-week start.  Adm had built an impressive lead in first place but it all vanished in the matter of two weeks only.  ODB was team leader this week with 18.25 pts but that was the last time that he had the opportunity to score anything at all, due to his season ending injury.  This is a massive blow for Adm.  As if it could not get any worse, Gurley showed that he won't be able to sustain his early season success now that he is entering a phase of the schedule where he is playing tough defenses.  He could not do better than 50 yards from scrimmage against the Hawks defense.  Fellow RB Hyde had also been a pleasant surprise but this week he was benched in the second half of the 49ers game despite being healthy.  He finished with only 2.5 pts and one of those points was a recovery of Hoyer's fumble.  He was completely outrushed 10-49 to 8-11 by his teammate M Breida.

The GloriousBastards were in position to finish 4th before MNF but S Diggs' stinker of 1 reception for 4 yards sunk the team to last place this week and back to last place in the standings.  Bas still lead the league in injury points and cannot wait for Luck to come back to health.  Dalton scored 12.75 pts which was not a disaster but he is simply not starter material, ranking 18th best QB.  E Elliott showed some signs of life with 11 pts but could not score.  Nevertheless he has been climbing the RB ranks slowly, now up to 4th best.  At WR, Bas benched D Adams which seemed like a wise move after Adams got smashed in the head by Trevathan a few days earlier.  But Adams proved to be a tough guy and came right back with 7 receptions and 2 TDs.  Benching Adams was costly because not only starter Diggs stunk, but also Cooks did not do all that much with only 9.25 pts.  Like so many other teams, Bas was without a kicker this week which did not help, and the Giants defense continues to suck, even at home against a previously winless team.  They only scored 3 pts against the Chargers.
