2009 Week #01
1st Place JakesBlues 177.75 pts
4th Place BeaudoinBrothers 131 pts
8th Place UncleJack 107.75 pts
9th Place Decepticons 89.5 pts
The JakesBlues came into the season predicted dead last by Vegas odds. However JB shocked the league by exploding out of the gate with 169 pts and the franchise’s first win ever . Last year, JB’s best result was only 155.25 pts (3rd place). Franchise player Drew Brees led the way with 6 TDs and 45.75 pts. One could say the Saints won’t play the Lions every week, but there were other major contributors on JB’s team. Star WR G Jennings scored the game-winning TD for the Packers with a little over one minute left and he even scored the 2-pt conversion. TE J Carlson was surprisingly the highest scoring TE of the league with 2 TDs and 22.75 pts. High draft pick A Atogwe did not disappoint with 14.5 pts, the second highest score for a DB. It is worth noting that JB’s win came despite Anthony Gonzalez getting injured during the game and scoring no point and rookie Maclin being scoreless as well. The bottom line is JB could avoid those zeros in the future and might remain very competitive despite a probable slowdown by D Brees.
The Dugongs had a solid week #1 and finished second in the standings . Dug was upgraded to league favorites after their performance by Vegas odds makers. Dug had good performances across the board except at the rookie position and B Edwards who only scored 1.5 pt but had a 34-yard TD reception nullified by a strange call from the ref. Franchise player Adrian Peterson scored 3 TDs and 34.5 pts to lead the way. Dug even got unexpected contribution from Osi Umenyiora who scored a TD and seems to be fully recovered from his 2008 injury. RB Kevin Smith was held to only 20 rushing yards as the Lions got crushed, but he nonetheless got 52 receiving yards and scored a TD, which helped Dug. The Dugongs seem to have a complete team and should be a force to be reckoned with all year.
The Spitoons also had a strong start despite being ranked low by Vegas, similar to JB. Romo was a bit slow at the beginning but ended up scoring 3 TDs on long bombs between 42 and 80 yards. Reggie Wayne also did quite well with 26 pts and the departure of M Harrison combined with the injury to A Gonzalez should benefit him significantly. Spi needed a bigger contribution from first round pick M Forte to finish higher in the standings. Forte only got 55 rushing yards on 25 carries (average only 2.2 yds per carry) and no reception, no TD.
The BeaudoinBrothers had a disappointing performance of 131 pts and are lucky to escape with a 4th place. A late stat change by the NFL allowed the BBs to move ahead of Wax. McNabb had a decent game but got injured. Franchise player Turner only scored 5.5 pts, Gore scored 2 TDs but only rushed for 30 yards against the mediocre Cards defense. Steve Smith suffered from Delhomme’s suckness and only caught 3 short passes. There were enough concerns on the BB lineup as is, and the coach made the mistake of starting the Cowboys defense which was very porous against the Cards (1 pt) instead of starting the Eagles who crushed the Panthers (33 pts).
WaxOnWaxOff was another major disappointing team this week, finishing 5th. The team leader was a LB which is usually not a good sign. L Fletcher was dominant with 19.5 pts, almost all of these points coming from tackles and assists (11+7). R Moss had a good game with 12 receptions but did not score a TD. A major problem could be brewing for Wax at the RB position, which was expected to be strong for Wax. After MJD, Wax’s starter is supposed to be W Parker, but he was dreadful against the Titans. M Lynch is currently suspended and should come back, but Fred Jackson was very impressive in his absence. The same could be said of Pierre Thomas who missed the first game due to an injury, but backup Mike Bell did well (although it was the Lions) and R Bush is still part of the backfield.
Sixth place went to OldNo7 this week. Old was not far away from 4th place. On offense Matt Ryan did well with 19.25 pts and he connected with Tony Gonzalez for a TD which was worth 2 TDs for Old. T Gonzalez scored 15.5 pts. The problem for Old was mainly on defense, where the four individual starters combined for only 18 pts. Jared Allen was the main guilty party for this underperformance as he was held to a single point.

UncleJack lagged behind as expected by Vegas and finished 8th. UJ only drafted one college player and he’s not very good. M Lewis scored 0.75 pt. At the rookie position, UJ drafted four guys and they combined for 4.5 pts this week. UJ drafted one of the two who got goose eggs this week. Well, whatever. One or the other, it does not matter much. P Manning was subpar with 13.75 pts against the Jaguars. More is expected from the long-time franchise player in the UJ uniform. The relatively good news came at the RB position. UJ was supposed to struggle mightily but R Grant and J Addai both scored a TD and had a reasonable number of carries (16 and 17).
The Decepticons were the other major disappointment, after Beaud and Wax. The ‘Cons finished dead last by far, trailing UJ by 18.25 pts. Star LB P Willis almost outscored the core offense of Dec by himself: Willis 18 pts vs QB+RB+RB+WR+WR 19 pts . Cutler threw 4 INTs, Slaton fumbled, Ronnie Brown only had 10 carries because the Dolphins trailed all game, Andre Johnson was held to four short receptions, and the coach strangely started their worst WR L Coles who did as expected: badly, with only 1.5 pt. The only bright spot besides Willis was college QB Taylor Potts who is replacing former college star G Harrell (Beaud 2008) at Texas Tech. The departure of Crabtree did not seem to affect him. He threw for 7 TDs and 456 yds for 14.25 pts.
Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
