2008 Week #11
2nd Place BeaudoinBrothers 156 pts
4th Place UncleJack 129 pts * Ripped off by ref in Pittsburgh, should have been 136.5 pts *
6th Place JakesBlues 119.25 pts
7th Place Decepticons 114.75 pts
8th Place WaxOnWaxOff 114.5 pts
FlyingElvis earned a second win this season with 165 pts. With this win, FE is now only 6 rank-points behind the first place Spitoons. With 6 games to go there are now 6 teams who could mathematically jump in first place. This is by far the more competitive season the PQBFL has ever had. Leaders keep falling and challengers keep resurging when they are about to die. By game time on Sunday, FE was already a 27-pt favorite over other teams due to M Cassel playing like Brady on Thursday and scoring 39.25 pts in a losing effort. On Sunday, FE did not let up especially at the RB position with MB3 scoring 18.75 pts and DeAngelo Williams who is now firmly entrenched as a starting RB for FE who scored 23 more points. DW has entered the top 10 RB in the PQBFL with his performance this week. However FE's win was closer than expected notably due to the ongoing struggles of M Colston who only scored 4.5 pts. Since coming back from injury, Colston has only scored 22.25 pts in 4 games.
The BeaudoinBrothers showed in week #11 that they are not dead yet. The team had their best week since their week #7 win and moved into second place, only 2 rank-points behind the Spitoons. The BBs did it with a very balanced team because nobody had very big scores. Rookie Slaton led the team with 20 pts. Trent Cole finally paid dividends after being acquired in a trade by scoring 18 pts. M Turner started due to Portis' injury and benefited from the occasion by contributing 18.75 pts against the Broncos. His RB mate LT was decent with 13 pts, although not what we have gotten accustomed from him.
The Dugongs have underperformed all year and have stayed in the middle of the standings for most of the season, but they are now in 4th place only 4 rank-points behind Spi. They are in a good position to cause a surprise. The Dugongs renaissance is due to more consistency from weeks 6-11 with the team finishing 2nd and 6th in all of those weeks and between 2nd and 4th in all those weeks except one. As if this season could not get any crazier, the Dugongs benefited from a huge rip off. They should have been beat by UJ but the ref in Pittsburgh cheated and did not count the TD by the Steelers defense at the end of the game. If the Dugongs win the PQBFL title by only one rank-point, this will be tainted. Dug had a very inconsistent lineup this week however. TJ Housh (26.25 pts), Gore (16.5 pts), the Packers defense (19 pts), and Gibril Wilson (13.5 pts) all had very good games. However the Dugongs suffered from the suckness of Lee Evans (1 pt), T Sheffler (0 pt), Ju Tuck (2 pts), and Adrian Peterson (6.75 pts).
All UncleJack can say this week is that they have been blatantly ripped off After the game, UJ's coach was livid: "Theft in broad day light, plain and simple. No sports has ever seen a ref look at a replay, issue his decision, and then have this decision changed later on. Also considering that the Steelers got 13 penalties in that game to the Chargers' single penalty, this sounds VERY fishy. Next time this fucking ref and his crew bet on a game they are officiating, they should not cheat so openly. Those fuckers should end up in jail." If it was not for UJ's slow start, this team would also be in the race for the league championship. Since week 6, UJ has been about as good as anybody else, only earning 3 rank-points less than the Dugongs during this period. P Manning continues to do the job with 23.5 pts this week. He has scored over 18 pts in 5 of his last 6 games and also in four games in a row. Manning is now 6th best QB in the league. WR Calvin Johnson had a good game with washed up Culpepper by scoring a TD and catching 6 passes. On defense the Steelers scored 15.5 pts but should have scored 23 pts if not for the ref cheating.
OldNo7 played trouble-maker this week with a 5th place and beating all of the top three teams in the standings prior to this week: Spi, Wax, and Dec. Old did it with only one healthy RB, and that RB being a loser (LJ = 6.25 pts). Old got good production from Favre (19.5 pts) at QB. At WR, Boldin did not score a TD but the monster caught 13 passes for 186 yards . Boldin has been huge all year and he's crushing all WRs in the PQBFL by more than 5 pts per game at his position, which is an outstanding accomplishment at this point. Last year, R Moss dominated his position by less than 3 pts per game. Boldin has scored over 23 pts in three of his last 4 games. No other position in the league is dominated by more than 2 pts per game so far. Old also benefited from a good game from D Bowe with 20.75 pts. Benching B Edwards turned out to be a good decision.
JB also played trouble-maker by beating Spi, Wax, and Dec despite not having an active college player and getting a goose egg at the DB position because of Trufant sucking. Joe Addai came back from the dead with 24.75 pts this week. This bum had not scored more than 3.75 pts since week #5! It was about time he showed up. On defense the Giants neutralized the Ravens and scored 18.5 pts including a TD. The Giants rank 4th best defense in the league but all top 5 defenses are within 0.3 pts per game so they are pretty much tied for first. One player that can be blamed for the JB's struggles this year is Chad Johnson. He only scored 5.5 pts this week and he's barely in the top 30 WRs in the league. His ass is out of Cincy for sure at the end of the season.
The Decepticons bucked the trend in week #10 by winning for a second week in a row, but the fall was simply delayed by one week. Dec crashed in the red for the first time since week #4. They should consider themselves fortunate to edge Wax by only a quarter of a point. When your team leader is a DB you know you are in trouble. M Lewis had a great game this week with 16.5 pts. College QB LeFevour scored 10 pts which made the difference for Dec against Wax. At WR, Dec just barely enough scoring from R Wayne (11.5 pts) and R White (11 pts). R Wayne is still in the top 10 but he's not been that great since week 7 (less than 10 pts per game on average). The Decepticons dropped to third place and are only half a rank-point ahead of Dug. They still are seen as the league favorites by Vegas but it can only be seen as a shaky investment at this point.
WaxOnWaxOff's slide continues with an 8th place for the third time in 5 weeks. Since week #7 Wax has only topped Old and JB. P Rivers had not scored less than 8 pts all year but he was horrible against the Steelers this week with -1.5 pt. DL Mario Williams disappointed with 2 pts this week which was also his worst game of the year. Wax suffered from the bye week of college star Sam Bradford. C Wells was drafted by Wax to bolster the team in 2009, not for his 2008 production. Wells scored 4.25 pts whis is not what Bradford is used to scoring (his season low is 6.75 pts). Wax dropped to 6th place and is now in danger of being knocked out of the race if the team does not recover soon. The good news is that in this crazy season, Wax was still able to get closer to first place despite finishing 8th because Spi did even worse. Wax could be in 1st place next week - they are still only 6 rank-points behind Spi.
The most consistent team of the league by all standards finally tumbled. After finishing no lower than 6th in the first ten weeks, finishing in the top 5 in 9 weeks out of 10, and in the top 4 in each of the last four weeks to catapult the team in first place, the Spitoons shockingly finished last in a major fall from grace. The Spitoons had a decent lead however so they still hang on to the top spot. However, Beaud, Dug, and FE are hard charging and Wax+Dec was allowed to move closer. This year it only takes one week of underperformance to suddenly expose a team's weakness. Actually, Spi's weaknesses were known all along by Vegas. Despite their recent successes, they have not been ranked as the favorites to win the title all year, sometimes being behind Dec, Wax, or Beaud. The problem starts at the RB position. Westbrook is banged up, Re Bush has missed 3 games to injury, and Spi has no depth. They were able to get 9.25 pts out of MoMo this week but it's the exception, not the rule. MoMo's season high was previously 5.5 pts. Another problem is at DL. Jason Taylor and Kyle Vanden Bosch are both very good, but they are not healthy. They both have been in and out of the lineup due to injury, and when they are playing, the points just aren't there. In the last 7 weeks, the best score by either of them was 4 pts by Taylor in week 6. And on that week, Spi preferred to start Vanden Bosch who was on bye . The other problem is the rookie position. Both K Rivers and D Connor are out for the year. The other rookie M Bush has been moved to fullback. We can't expect much out of him. With the trade deadline that just passed, we can congratulate the Spitoons' GM for the acquisition of T Gonzalez and P Willis from Wax, having to give up Rivers but Spi was stacked at QB (Romo + Warner). However, the GM should be blamed for not moving for a mediocre DL and rookie. A team like OldNo7 would certainly have been willing to trade backup rookies D Avery or X Adibi to boost their chances to win in 2009. Avery scored 13.5 pts and Adibi scored 15 pts this week on the bench for Old - Hightower is clearly the starting rookie in whisky-land.
Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
