The Decepticons did not stay 2nd favorite for very long.  They easily distanced the competition in week #1 and became the league favorite right off the bat.  In the PQBFL 11-year history, the PQBFL champion did very well in week #1: finished 1st in week #1 six times, finished 2nd in week #1 three times, and finished 3rd in week #1 twice.  The PQBFL champion has never finished lower than 3rd place in week #1.  This week McNabb was clearly Dec’s leader with 30.25 pts, but all key players also contributed.  The starting RBs and WRs all scored double digits and Winslow did too.  A Johnson and R Wayne both caught 10 passes and T Jones + B Jacobs each rushed for over 100 yards.  Dec only had a bit of a weakness at the LB position with D Harris and Morrison scoring only five pts each, but that was not significant due to the offensive production of Dec.

WaxOnWaxOff took a big jump in the Vegas odds after the draft and proved the team is for real with a second place this week.  Willie Parker was a disappointment in 2007 for the BeaudoinBrothers by scoring only 2 TDs in 15 games.  Well the dude scored 3 TDs this week alone!  The change of uniform paid off handsomely for Parker.  The other RB acquisition from Beaud also did well, M Lynch scored a TD and got 14.75 pts.  Second round pick T Owens scored on a long TD and got almost 100 yards receiving.  Another draft acquisition Chris Johnson the rookie RB from the Titans was one of the highest scoring rookies this week with 16.5 pts.  Wax could have beat Dec if not for Garrard’s dreadful performance of 3 turnovers, two of which were INTs.  Garrard only had 3 INTs all of last year in 12 games.

The Spitoons are intent on bouncing back from last year’s last place.  Spi finished on top of a tight pack of three teams for 3rd, 4th, and 5th place.  Reggie Bush was the team’s top scorer with 21.5 pts.  However he proved once again that he is a receiver, not a RB , getting 112 receiving yards compared to only 51 rushing yards.  His 42-yd TD was on a reception as well.  Franchise player Westbrook had an easy day at home against the Rams with 2 TDs and Romo was adequate with 14.5 pts.  Spitoons’ receivers were a bit off the mark with both Welker and M Harrison fumbling the ball and H Miller not contributing to the Steelers offense which ran all day.

The BeaudoinBrothers came out flat this season with a 4th place.  Their production came on the bench with M Turner scoring 31.75 pts but the coach started Portis instead (only 7 pts) .  Given that Portis was playing the Giants and Turner was playing the Lions, this was a very questionable call.  Roethlisberger had a good day given the circumstances, scoring more points (14.75 pts) than the number of passes he attempted (14).  LT hurt his toe and was held to 9.25 pts, while R Moss scored 16.75 pts but he did his damage early in the game.  He did not do much in the second half when Brady was out.

The JakesBlues surprised with a 5th place this week instead of feeding the bottom.  D Brees had a big game with 30.25 pts thanks to 3 TDs and almost 350 yds passing .  A Gates scored a TD but he also had a critical fumble which led to a Panthers TD.  Rookie D Jackson did well with 6 receptions for over 100 yds in his debut with the Eagles.  If McNabb builds good chemistry with him, he could have a very surprising year.  JB could have finished 3rd if star DL J Allen had done better.  Allen was the first defensive player taken in the draft and all he got this week was a pass defended.  Not even a single tackle or assist!  Chad Johnson did not help either by only scoring 2 pts.  The entire Bengals offense was shitty last Sunday.

UncleJack ended week #1 was a subpar 6th place .  Dallas Clark’s injury on SNF did not help.  Clark could only score 1.25 pts.  P Manning had an off night, throwing for only one TD.  The season had started very well with the Thursday game where P Burress caught 10 passes and L Fletcher was on fire, getting 12 tackles and 5 assists.  However things went downhill on Saturday and Sunday.  UJ started college RB D Fletcher who only scored 1.75 pts while WR D Love was on the bench with 9.25 pts.  Then UJ’s RBs did not score on Sunday plus Mendenhall gave way to the W Parker show against the Texans.  At least the Steelers defense was strong in that game, scoring 12.5 pts for UJ.  UJ can blame the team’s starting RBs.  E Graham did not score and did not reach 100 yds rushing, and J Lewis was worse, only getting 62 yds on the ground and no TD either.

The Dugongs had hiccups during the draft especially with rookies, and it spilled over into week #1.  The Dugongs started McFadden on MNF but he only scored 4.75 pts while backups K Smith and M Forte scored 11.5 pts and 19.75 pts on the bench, not mentioning Chris Johnson who was traded to Wax who had a great game too.  However the major problem for Dug was T Heap’s performance.  It is nearly impossible for a TE to score negative points but Heap accomplished such a feat.  He only caught one pass for 5 yards and he fumbled it away to the Bengals.  He could only have done worse if he did that on a reverse (not a reception).   TJ Housh was a big disappointment with only 5 pts, struggling as much as C Palmer and C Johnson.  The good news was the performance of A Rodgers at the QB position.  Dug had the guts of starting the unproven QB against a decent defense (Vikings) instead of the more experienced Kitna or Hasselbeck.  It paid off because Rodgers scored 18.5 pts, more than the other two QBs on Dug’s team.  Dug also had good production from the team’s strength: the starting RBs.  A Peterson and Gore scored 34 pts combined.

OldNo7 had a disappointing week #1 with an 8th place.  When the team’s top 2 scorers are a LB and the defense, it’s not a good sign.  The Cards manhandled the 49ers offense allowing only 13 pts, and creating 5 turnovers on top of sacking the QB 4 times.  Briggs had a great game mainly thanks to his 21-yd TD on a fumble recovery.  However the rest of the defense left to be desired.  Hopes were high that Peppers would be back to his old days this season, but his 2-pt performance was a real stinker.  DB Rhodes was not much better with 4 pts.  On offense, S Jackson and LJ are supposed to be Old’s top 2 players but they combined for only 13 pts, both failing to score a TD.  D Anderson and B Edwards both had an off day.  When a PQBFL team has a QB-WR combo from the same NFL team, things can get really bad if the offense goes nowhere like the Browns did on Sunday.  Edwards only caught 2 passes for 14 yds.

FlyingElvis finished dead last this week and will finish dead last very often this season.  DB B Pollard from OldNo7 had the most significant play of the week, knocking out Brady for the season.  FE was the team the most reliant on a single player of the entire PQBFL, by having absolutely no depth at the position.  FE now has no chance of winning the league and is a huge favorite to finish last this season.    The only good news is that the first pick overall of the 2009 draft is almost a certainty because FE will rack up more injury points each week than the number of points the team will score on the field.   FE started preparing for the 2009 draft on Monday after finding out the extent of Brady’s injury.
