*** Note: since my brother is no longer part of the league, scores are not double-checked like they were in the past.  This year I partially automated the way I get stats from the gamebooks which Steve checked before the season, but problems could happen nonetheless.  Especially if rankings are close on any given week, feel free to verify your score.  ***

The BeaudoinBrothers came out on top of the initial week to start on the right foot.  Roethlisberger, supposedly the worst pick of the BB draft according to the draft analysis , threw for 4 TDs and no turnover to score over 30 pts.  LT and Gates were being held in check by the tough Bears defense until LT threw a TD pass to Gates on a trick play .  This is something the BBs had been waiting for a long time.  It almost happened last year when Gates dropped a sure TD from LT.  The BB WRs had injury issues after the draft but showed no ill effects in week #1.  Holt and TJ Housh both scored a TD and caught 8 and 9 passes, respectively.

The top two favorites of 2007 both finished in the top two this week, with the Spitoons scoring 161 pts to top UncleJack.  Eli Manning torched the horrible Cowboys defense with 31.25 pts.  The Ravens D gave Spi a chance to beat the BBs on Monday night by scoring 16 pts on the road against the powerful Bengals offense, but Larry Fitzgerald disappointed with only 5 pts in the last game of the week .  On defense, Jason Taylor was his usual self with another double-digit game.  Zach Thomas has not been told yet that he is old.  He keeps racking up points – he got 17 this week.

UncleJack made a statement about not deserving to be last based on the Vegas odds with a surprising third place.  Franchise player P Manning started it off on opening night with 31.5 pts.  The WR duo Chad Johnson / Javon Walker is supposed to be a top WR combination in the PQBFL and they did not disappoint with 31.5 pts.  E James had a good game on MNF to help UJ beat Wax by two points.  However, Jamal Lewis had a rough outing against the Steelers with only 0.75 pt.  The good news for UJ however is that RB depth might not be as bad as expected.  Chris Brown was benched this week but he ran wild with 175 rushing yards in Jacksonville .  Brown could be key to UJ this season if he can keep it up.  On defense, the Chargers completely dominated the Bears and scored 16.5 pts.  LB Tatupu was UJ's top scorer amongst individual defensive players with 15 pts.

WaxOnWaxOff came up a bit short of the top three with 152.5 pts.  Bulger was taken very early in the draft but was eclipsed by other QBs like Roethlisberger and E Manning this week and he was the main reason why Wax finished after Beaud, Spi, and UJ.  Wax’s RBs also struggled with only 6 pts for Maroney and 3 pts for Cadillac.  Wax benched Randy Moss (26 pts) in favor of Reggie Brown (1.5 pt) .  We can probably expect that this is the last time this season it happens.  R Moss seems to be back to the top WR that he was a few years ago.  Wax’s top scorer this week was the Vikings defense who scored 2 TDs on 2 INT returns and held the Falcons to only three points.  DL Mario Williams also scored a long TD for Wax.  If it was not for rookie Calvin Johnson scoring the first TD of his career, Wax would have scored as many TDs on defense (3) than on offense (Bulger 1, Steve Smith 1, Heath Miller 1).

FlyingElvis scored 141.5 pts this week but could not believe that was not enough to put the team in the top 4 this week .  Brady led the way with 29 pts and T Owens was the second best on FE’s team with 22.25 pts this week.  However FE was killed by bad games from Benson (1.25 pts) and V Davis (2 pts), along with only 21 pts from the four defensive players which was the lowest of all PQBFL teams this week.  Rookie M Lynch did have an impressive debut with 15.25 pts against the tough Broncos defense.  He looked real good on his TD run and on a 4th down carry where he crushed the defender to get the first down.  College player Brian Brohm was the highest scorer of the week at his position with 11.25 pts (5 TDs and 400+ passing yds).

The Dugongs were in the hunt for first place until a few sub-par performances on MNF dropped them to the bottom half of the standings.  Todd Heap only scored 5.25 pts, Gore was not awful with 11.25 pts but more was expected against the Cards defense.  Boldin scored a TD in that same game but only had 22 yds receiving.  McNabb was a high pick like Bulger and he also dragged the Dugongs this week by only scoring 8.75 pts – a huge difference from the 30+ pts from the top three team’s QBs this week.  The Dugongs coach made a huge mistake by making a late roster change: L Coles was benched (19.75 pts) and S Moss started (4.25 pts) .  If the coach had not made this change, Dug would have finished third instead of sixth.  Note the bad game by Larry Johnson (7.25 pts) against the below-average defense of the Texans.  There were several question marks around LJ in preseason, and none of them went away in week #1.  On the positive side, Chester Taylor got injured which opened the door to the Dugongs’ rookie Adrian Peterson to take the bulk of the carries.  Peterson had a big first day with 22.5 pts, which was the best score by all rookies this week by far (M Lynch – FE 15.25 pts was second).

The Decepticons started the season in horrible fashion with Brees getting a negative score, Mare missing a FG, and Colston not reaching 50 receiving yds against the Colts during the opening game .  To make things worse, college RB Ian Johnson only scored 1.75 pts as Boise State lost for the first time since 2005.  On Sunday, Dec did better but could not overcome the slow start on Thursday.  T Henry got 183 yds from scrimmage but did not score a TD.  A Johnson scored on a 77-yard bomb, which turned out to be the only offensive TD for Dec.  The Pats defense and A Winfield both scored a TD on defense.  Rookie Patrick Willis was drafted after Posluszny but might actually be the better rookie LB.  Willis had a big game on MNF with 9 tackles, 2 assists, one forced fumble and one QB hit.

OldNo7 finished dead last to start the 2007 season, which is the first time it happened since the 2000 season when Old ended up having the worst team of PQBFL history.  The season started well with Reggie Wayne scoring 24.75 pts on Thursday night, but in that same game Reggie Bush was held in check with only 4.75 pts.  Franchise player Steven Jackson had a stinker with a goose egg, thanks to two lost fumbles.  Dropsies were a big problem for Old this week.  Braylon Edwards also fumbled – even the Chiefs defense / special team lost a fumble .  Rookie Anthony Gonzalez was blanked out – obviously he was the worst starting rookie this week.  C Palmer (18.25 pts) and the freakin’ kicker (Vinatieri 10 pts) were the only two to reach double-digits for OldNo7 besides R Wayne.

Note: sometimes the NFL announces stats changes and according to PQBFL rules, the results are not totally official until Sunday 1pm Eastern.
