WaxOnWaxOff opened the 2006 season in force with a 12-point win over the Dugongs in week #1 .  Wax won this one with defense.  J Abraham had two sacks and two forced fumbles for 18.5 pts.  T Polamalu was everywhere on the field with 4 tackles, 6 assists, 1 INT, 1 PD, and 1 forced fumble.  Wax's LBs were not too bad either with R Lewis and Z Thomas scoring 14.5 and 13.5 pts.  Wax's four defensive players scored 66 pts together, which is 15 pts more than the 2nd best team on defense this week (UJ with 49 pts).  On offense, E Manning threw for 2 TDs while R Johnson and P Burress each scored one.  But perhaps the best news of the week for Wax is the use of rookie L Maroney in the Pats game against the Bills.  Maroney was used as much as Dillon so it is promising for Wax.  Maroney might turn out to be worth the high draft pick.  The week #1 win by Wax is very positive for the team's chances to win the league this year.  In the last eight years in the PQBFL, the week #1 winner won the league five times so week #1 results have been a pretty good predictor of whether a team will be competitive or not.

The Dugongs had a great week with a 2nd place, barely beating the Spitoons by 1.5 pt.  The Cards had an easy matchup against the 49ers and the Dugongs took advantage of it .  K Warner threw of three TDs (23 pts), E James scored once (12 pts), and L Fitz caught nine passes (15.5 pts).  Ronnie Brown was held in check on Thursday by the Steelers defense, but he scored 2 TDs.  Rookie M Bell did not start against the Rams, but he has used quite a bit as expected and scored 1 TD to go along with 88 yds from scrimmage, which is not bad at all for a rookie.  This was the 2nd best performance by a rookie in week #1 (12 pts).  The Dugongs failed to beat Wax due to the disappointing game by E Kennison with only 3 pts.  The Panthers D was also disappointing by scoring only 3.5 pts against the Falcons.

The Spitoons got a respectable 3rd place finish in week #1 but N Kaeding could have lifted the Spitoons to 2nd place on MNF.  He kicked 2 FGs and three x-pts which is already a pretty good game, but he needed 2 more points to beat the Dugongs.  Just like last year, the Spitoons' WRs carried the team.  M Harrison caught nine passes and scored 14.5 pts.  T Owens scored a TD and got 17 pts.  The Spitoons' WR duo outscored all other teams in the PQBFL by a big margin (31.5 for Spi vs 22 for Old).  The team's highest scorer this week was the Ravens D who completely dominated the Bucs by holding them scoreless, getting 3 INTs and scoring a TD.  The Spitoons could have been first this week if the team's cannons showed up on the field.  Shaun Alexander only scored one point against the Lions.  Carson Palmer did the same at KC.  Note that the Spitoons had the highest coaching efficiency this week at 88.1%, barely in front of Wax at 88.0%

UncleJack got a great start in week #1 and was projected to finish second after the Sunday games, but UJ fell flat on MNF with a disappointing game from both L Jordan (1.5 pt) and McCardell (1.5 pt) .  UJ finished fourth and was nearly beat at the end by the BeaudoinBrothers.  UJ had a great week on defense.  L Fletcher scored a TD on a fumble recovery, N Barnett got 4 tackles, 5 assists, one INT and one PD for a total of 15.5 pts, the Steelers D scored 15 pts and A Rolle also scored double-digits.  T Gonzalez had a big week with 19 pts and it looks like he is back to his 2004 form.  P Manning had an ok week with 11 pts, but as a franchise player, UJ expects more from him.  P Manning was the 9th best QB in the PQBFL this week.  The rookie position is expected to be a weakness for UJ this year, and Demetrius Williams did nothing to change that view by only catching one pass for nine yards.

The BeaudoinBrothers of 2005 are gone and 2006 will be much tougher.  In 2005, the worst week by the BeaudoinBrothers was week #7 when injuries and bye weeks hit the team and the BBs finished 5th with only 112.25 pts.  This week the BBs barely did better with 119 pts.  If the BBs want to repeat and win the title, they will have to go against the history because the champion of the last 8 yrs finished either first or second in week #1.  We have to go back to the PQBFL initial year (1997) to see a champion who did not finish 1st or 2nd in week #1.  The BBs did not get much production at all until MNF when LT and Gates each scored a TD.  The best performance was from the Bears defense with 24 pts.  Other than that, almost all players for the BBs were very average or below average.  Hasselbeck scored 8 pts against the Lions - not horrible, but clearly below expectations.  C Johnson and C Chambers only scored 8 and 8.5 pts.  This is not totally shitty, but again clearly below 2005 levels.  R Droughns was the only player who totally sucked.  He only rushed for 27 yds against the Saints D at home .  You can bet he won't return to the BB starting lineup anytime soon.  The RB2 position was expected to be the BB weakness and the BBs paid the price this week.

FlyingElvis had high hopes coming into this year due to a strong draft and a decent saved team from last year.  However week #1 was very disappointing with only a 6th place finish.  Steve Smith missed the game to an injury so that did not help FE.  Backup Matt Jones scored 8 pts so he did not perform like S Smith can.  FE had the shame of seeing their kicker being the highest scorer on the team when J Wilkins scored 14 pts .  Wilkins was 6/7 on FGs.  Franchise player Larry Johnson did ok with 148 yds from scrimmage but failed to score a TD.  More than 13 pts per week is expected of him.  Brady and Watson had a frustrating game at home against the Bills and they were lucky to escape with a win.  Watson only caught three passes and Brady had one INT and one fumble lost but scored 10 pts nonetheless.  Note that after one week, FE has the lowest strength of starters.  Part of it is due to S Smith’s injury, but this is worrisome regardless.  None of FE’s backups did particularly well in this except for backup rookie V Davis who outscored starter D Williams 10.5 to 0.5.  D Williams did not even get a carry in week #1 so he will have to wait later in the season for D Foster to get injured or to gain the coaching staff’s confidence and get some carries away from Foster.

OldNo7 had a disappointing 7th place with only 112 pts.  Old had a pretty good week overall except for two things that completely sunk the team.  Jake Plummer was putrid by throwing for only 138 yds and being victim of 4 turnovers (3 INTs and one fumble lost) .  Plummer scored -6.5 pts while backup McNair scored 11 pts, which is a swing of 17.5 pts.  Plummer was shocked by the Rams defense which was not supposed to be that good.  Rumors of rookie Jay Cutler starting in Denver might start soon.  The other screw up can be blamed squarely on the shoulder of OldNo7’s coach.  LB Bruschi started but he was injured.  Backup Briggs scored 12 pts.  Since week #1 was relatively tight, this made a difference for OldNo7.  Other than the QB and defensive flex Bruschi, Old had a good week.  All four RBs and WRs scored in the double-digits even though they did not score a TD.  S Jackson, F Taylor, T Holt, and A Johnson had over 100 yds from scrimmage except for Holt who had 80 yds.  On defense, Old’s non-injured starters did well with Bulluck led the league with 14 tackles+assists, Ju Peppers blocked a kick, and DB Tillman intercepted a pass from Favre.  Perhaps the best news of the week for OldNo7 is how R Bush was used in the Saints offense.  Bush carried the ball 14 times in addition to catching 8 passes.  He was targeted frequently in the passing game which is promising for the rest of the season.

The Decepticons are back after one year off and has most expansion teams in the PQBFL, they struggled mightily out of the gate.  The ‘Cons barely reached 100 pts this week.  In the last eight years, the team that finished last in week #1 finished last for the season six times.  The other two times, the week #1 loser finished next to last and third of five teams.  The Decepticons’ odds are not in their favor and the Las Vegas bookmakers hammered them after the week #1 results.  It might be a long season for the Decepticons.  After one week, Dec ranks 7th in strength of starters and 7th in coaching efficiency.  This is not a good combination .  McNabb was one of the very few bright spots for the Decepticons.  McNabb was the highest scorer of the PQBFL in week #1 with 27.5 pts.  Franchise player Tiki Barber also had a good game with 171 yds from scrimmage but he did not score a TD against the Colts.  Dec’s WRs were very disappointing with only 7 pts from R Wayne and 5 pts from J Walker.  Cooley did not support the GM’s decision to draft him instead of trading for Shockey because he only caught 2 passes for negative three yards.  Rookie Vince Young only attempted four passes and found a way to get picked off once.  On defense, the Decepticons were the worst of the PQBFL with only 25 pts in total for D Burgess, A Davis, K Brooking, and E Coleman.
