2004 Week #17

1st Place Spitoons 155 pts

2nd Place OldNo7 154.5 pts

3rd Place BeaudoinBrothers 139 pts

4th Place Decepticons 119.5 pts

5th Place UncleJack 111 pts

6th Place WaxOnWaxOff 110.5 pts

The Spitoons finished the season with strength with their third win (untied) of the season and secured the league's third place overall in front of WaxOnWaxOff.  In a must-win game, Marc Bulger threw for 450 yds and three TDs.  Tony Gonzalez did not score a TD but he was on fire with 14 receptions.  On defense, Greg Wesley was dominant with 10 tackles, 1 assist, 1 INT, one pass defended and one forced fumble.  Roy Williams finished the season well by scoring a TD.  He ended up the league's 6 best rookie.  Shaun Alexander "the selfish" finished within one yard of C Martin for the NFL rushing title and said his coach stabbed him in the back for calling a QB sneak instead of giving him the ball (the QB sneak being the winning TD for his team).  Way to go Shaun.  He finished the season 4th best RB and he will probably be tagged as the Spitoons' franchise player for 2005.

OldNo7 finished 2nd for the third time in the last five weeks and edged UncleJack in 5th place to avoid being the league's doormat.   If Priest Holmes had not been injured at mid-season, Old could have been even more dominant down the stretch.  However, it was part of the risk of drafting him in the first place.  OldNo7's management will have a tough decision next year.  Keeping Priest as the franchise player could be a risky move for a 32 year-old RB who has decent backups.  In week #17, OldNo7 made a great heads up management move by dropping Clinton Portis who had been put and IR and selected Larry Johnson instead.  Johnson scored 24 pts which ended up being the key to beat the BeaudoinBrothers.  Without that decision, Old would have finished 3rd this week, and tied with UJ in 5th place overall but would have lost the tie-breaker because Old scored 2175.5 overall points compared to UJ's 2210.25.  Also note Rudi Johnson who finished strong with 3 TDs and 23 pts.  Torry Holt partly redeemed himself for his slightly disappointing season by scoring 26 pts in the season finale.  Holt finished 5th best WR which is not bad.

The BeaudoinBrothers could not do the impossible in week #17 and finished third.  This gives the team an acceptable 2nd place overall this season.  This is the 7th time in 8 seasons that the team finished 1st or 2nd.  Tough to beat for consistency.  The team did not finish last all year and now have 32 straight weeks without being last.  The BeaudoinBrothers did ok in week #17 considering all the stars that were benched.  LT, McNabb, and Gates did not play.  To make things worse, Shockey missed the game due to an injury so the BeaudoinBrothers were without a TE.  In LT's replacement, Lee Suggs scored 12 pts and gives some hope for the 2005 season.  Suggs could very well end up in the saved squad for the BeaudoinBrothers.  The BeaudoinBrothers' weakness in the 2nd half of the season was the WR position and this group disappointed again as Moulds and A Johnson only scored 7 pts together.  Keith Bulluck finished strong by scoring a TD and 26.5 pts.  He closed the season as the league's 2nd best LB after D Edwards.  Other league owners will have a tough choice in deciding whether to cut Bulluck and R Harrison from the BeaudoinBrothers' team in 2005.  W McGahee scored 2 more TDs to finish with 13 in just over half a season as the starter.  He is touted on CBS and ESPN as one of the best saved player for 2005 in the NFL.  With LT on the team, the BeaudoinBrothers may have 2 of the top 3 saved players and could trade one of them before the 2005 draft to a team with a lesser franchise player.

The Decepticons struggled some in week #17 but only had to avoid last place which they did on Sunday Night Football after a little bit of a scare.  Julius Jones scored 21 pts to close the books.  This is the Decepticons' second straight PQBFL title, which is tough to do given the level of competition in the league.  Loser Culpepper scored 27 pts as the Vikings lost again in a key game.  They are very lucky to make it to the playoffs.  There is no player in the NFL putting out better stats than him but losing all the important games.  The Decepticons will probably have to choose between Culpepper and E James for their franchise player.  With E James possibly going to Miami, Culpepper may be the logical choice.  In week #17, Joe Horn scored another TD to allow the Vikings make the playoffs when the Saints beat the Panthers.  Horn finished 2nd best WR behind T Owens which is pretty stunning.  Horn is getting old so he will be a interesting player to watch in the saved teams for 2005.

UncleJack failed to beat the Decepticons on Sunday Night and therefore finish in the league's basement in 2004.  The coach can be blamed for a few mistakes this season.  This week, starting Manning was costly because Pennington scored 12 pts compared to Manning's 0 pt because he was benched for the entire game but one drive.  Rookie Clayton scored another TD and 15 pts to finish as the league's 2nd best rookie.  Considering that 1st rookie Ju Jones missed many games, Clayton can probably be considered the league's most productive.  UncleJack's lack of depth makes Clayton very doubtful to remain on UJ's team as he will probably be cut.  UJ needs a lot of work in the 2005 draft because the saved players will be the weakest of all six teams in the PQBFL.

WaxOnWaxOff completed their late season collapse filled with injuries and disappointments with a 4th last place this season.  After 12 weeks, Wax was sitting in 2nd place, only three points from 1st place, but in the last five weeks of the season, Wax only scored 9 rank-points.  For once, key players did well in week #17 as Delhomme, McAllister, Barber, and R Moss all scored 15 pts or more.  However, Wax played without a LB or TE as all five were injured.  This is pretty tough to overcome.  Not to mention C Palmer missing another game to injury and backup Colbert only scoring 3 pts.  Add to that T Owens' absence... it is impossible to survive with so many injuries.  The outlook for 2005 is great however.  With so much depth, WaxOnWaxOff are the early season favorites along with the BeaudoinBrothers to win the championship in 2005 (see Las Vegas Odds 2005).  The team's only problem may be the lack of dominant franchise player.  Randy Moss and Terrell Owens may be selected, but these two guys are not rated in the top saved players for 2005 because of their injuries and their age.

Have a good offseason and good luck preparing for the 2005 draft!  I hope you enjoyed this season.
