Season 2009
*** The PQBFL Commissioner Imposes Sanctions On FlyingElvis for Quitting Mid Draft ***
FlyingElvis unfortunately had to deal with a personal issue involving his girlfriend while having to draft during his vacation on a trip. FE decided to quit mid-draft and did not submit a draft list for the remaining of the draft before leaving, and was not reachable by phone after announcing he was quitting. When quitting, FE declared that he had decided to take his medicine and accept being last in 2009.
The league determined that it would be far too harsh to ask FE to draft the rest of his team the next day (rounds 7-25 which is more than half of the roster) and that FE would also be greatly affected in 2010 by having an unbelievably weak saved team. So we drafted FE players in a fair and even generous way.
The problem is that the league integrity has been affected. The PQBFL always operated with rules as to minimize the luck element such that when a team wins, it deserves full credit, and when a team is bad, it must take accountability for it. Part of the fun in the PQBFL is also bragging rights when beating others. By having a team not drafting half of his roster, it is no fun to beat this team, and it is no fun to be beaten by this team.
As a consequence the league has decided to apply the following sanctions on FlyingElvis:
1. FlyingElvis is ineligible to finish first or second in 2009 and is therefore ineligible to appear on the PQBFL plaque. The PQBFL does not want to deal with a team winning the league and having an asterisk next to its name. A champion must win by drafting his team. Maybe FE would win thanks to Brady, LT, Marion Barber, etc. But it will be impossible to draw the line and determine if the supporting cast of FE did enough to tip FE into first or second place. So FE is disqualified from the league title and also second place in 2009. The beer prizes will be unaffected however. So if FE finishes second, he gets second place beer quantity. But in the standings FE would be officially third. FE had accepted finishing last in 2009 by accepting to draft his team after the draft. So this outcome is still far better because FE has the chance to finish 3rd to 8th instead of 9th.
2. FlyingElvis is disqualified from the PQBFL post-season.
3. Players currently on FE's roster are ineligible to accrue injury points. After discussion with OldNo7, this has been removed. FE cannot control injuries and the 2010 team is already affected by the 3rd round pick and the saved/cut player penalty (see #4 below).
4. FlyingElvis will have 6 offensive players cut instead of 5 offensive players cut during the 2010 offseason and FlyingElvis will only be able to save 8 players (plus a franchise player) with a minimum of 3 defensive players, as opposed to 9 players (plus a franchise player) with a minimum of 3 defensive players. The missing player will come in the form of an extra draft pick at the end of the 2010 draft. The goal is to purge more players from FE's team which have not been drafted by him, and to minimize the possibility that a lot of good players were drafted after FE quit, possibly helping the 2010 FE team.
5. FlyingElvis is barred from making trades until the 2010 draft. This will avoid a situation where FE tries to improve the 2009 team as much as possible by mortgaging the team's future and quitting during the offseason, and to avoid a situation where FE makes a fire sale in 2009 to improve in 2010, because the team cannot win in 2009.
Circumstances surrounding FE's decision to quit mid-draft are very unfortunate, but the PQBFL's main goal is to preserve league integrity and avoid a situation where an undeserving team beats a deserving team. It also highlights the importance of having a draft list ready to send to the PQBFL commissioner if something happens mid-draft which means you have to leave.
Those sanctions should be seen as a far better outcome for FE than if we decided to let FE draft the rest of his team the day after the draft, for both 2009 and 2010.
