Analysis of the 2012 PQBFL Draft

WaxOnWaxOff
WaxMini
Wax got hammered with injuries two years in a row but the end result is that Wax enters the 2012 season with the best RB and QB in the league.  Arian Foster was the first pick overall in last year’s draft and franchised by Wax this year, while A Rodgers was this year’s top pick.  Coincidentally, both JB and Dug let those players go by missing the franchise player deadline.   Foster and Rodgers lead Wax to the highest strength of starters in the PQBFL and favorites to win this season if injuries can stay at bay.
Best pick: Aaron Rodgers.  Wax normally prefers RBs early in the draft, but with Foster already on the roster, this was the logical choice rather than go with Ray Rice for a possible incredible RB duo.
Worst pick: Julio Jones.  17th overall for the second best WR on the Falcons, 3rd top WR drafted?  Awful move.
Strength: Starters.  Not only Wax has the top QB and RB in the league, but also the top TE (J Graham)
Weakness: Rookie.  Wax is the worst team in the league at the position.  Ryan Williams has a bum knee and is just hoping that Beanie Wells’ knee is even worst.  That does not provide points.

FlyingElvis
FEMini
FE won the league last year and returns with a strong saved team, not only Brady but excellent WR duo Dez Bryant and D Bowe.  FE should have an above average team this year again.
Best pick: Russell Wilson.  While others paid a high price for starting rookie QBs early in the draft, FE correctly predicted that Wilson would start in Seattle instead of Flynn.
Worst pick: after drafting J Pierre-Paul in the 6th round, going with Mario Williams in the 8th round was a waste.
Strength: Defensive players.  J Pierre-Paul, L Fletcher, Mayo, and Tyvon Branch is the best starting group of the league.
Weakness: Depth.  FE has a good starting team but it has the worst depth of the PQBFL. There is no decent QB behind Brady.  Ryan Matthews better be healthy because Sproles is not a starting RB and Fred Jackson is old, off an injury, and plays for a bad team.  FE did not even draft a backup college player.

OldNo7
OldMini
Old had one of the franchise’s best years ever with a 4th place finish last year and was only one rank-point away from second place.  While such a success might be an indicator that the team is on the right track to challenge in 2012, but the saved team is nothing to write home about.  The 49ers are possibly the top defense, but it’s not a key position.  V Jax is ok but is a backup, and the rest are bye week fillers: Locker, Meachem, Crabtree, M Bush.
Best pick: Roddy White.  Last pick of the 4th round for a guy of this caliber.  Huge bargain driven by Wax craziness on young WRs.
Worst pick: Michael Floyd.  It’s tough for rookie WRs to perform, and this guy does not have a good QB and is overshadowed by L Fitzgerald.  Way too early in the 8th round.
Strength: QBs.  Stafford is the starter and Rivers the backup.  Nobody has a backup of Rivers’ quality.  As QBs are injury pone, chances are Old can trade away one of them to a needing team.
Weakness: RBs after McCoy.  Forte might not be the full time starter anymore, Reggie Bush only had one good year, Ridley is stuck in NE RB hell-hole, and Spiller is a backup on a bad team.  The only good news is if Forte gets injured, Old has M Bush.

BeaudoinBrothers
BeaudMini
The BeaudoinBrothers enter the 2012 season with one of their weakest saved teams ever.  Newton is the franchise player but that’s clearly for the future because just for 2012 purposes, Chris Johnson should have been the man.  The proof is clear: CJ was drafted in the first round, but a guy like Stafford was taken only in the second round so Newton was worth a 2nd round pick at best.  Other saved players are banged up like Witten and C Wells.
Best pick: Owen Daniels.  With Witten banged up to start the season, have people forgotten that O Daniels is possibly the Texans’ second receiver behind A Johnson?  Available in the 22nd round, holy shit.
Worst pick: RG3.  He could be good, but 4th overall?  Sounds like Beaud is still dreaming about Newton’s 2011 season.  Too early.
Strength: WR depth.  Starters Welker and Harvin are average relative to other teams for a starting duo.  But backups make the difference: when Steve Smith and Miles Austin are healthy, they have potential to be starters.  Britt is the ideal WR5 because he won’t be needed early in the season and he has great value for 2013.
Weakness: depth on defense.  Starters might be ok, but backups are a yawn with guys like Nick Barnett, Jason Babin, and Q Mikell.

Spitoons
SpiMini
Spi was the door mat last year with 7 last place finishes, and 5 next-to-last place finishes.  With a winning percentage of 0.176, Spi came close to having the worst season ever, which remains OldNo7’s 2000 season with 0.132 and the historical seven straight last place finishes.  So the 2011 edition of Spi was the second worst in league history.  They cannot do worse this year.
Best pick: Rob Gronkowski.  Shortly after Wax took Graham, Spi was not afraid of drafting a TE in the second round given that Gronk puts up points like a WR does.
Worst pick: James Starks.  This guy is about to be cut and is unable to stay healthy.  At least Spi drafted Benson to cover up this blunder.
Strength: Rookie.  Andrew Luck is Spi’s franchise player and has potential to remain part of Spi’s team for a very long time.  In case there is a problem, Lavonte David is the perfect stable and predictable complement as a rookie LB.  Great combination.
Weakness: RBs.  Bradshaw is Spi’s top RB but he would be a backup on 4 other teams, and only 2nd best RB on 2 other teams.  And who will assume the second starting role?  There are a bunch of question marks: S Greene, I Redman, BJGE, Starks, Benson, P Thomas.  By far the weakest group in the PQBFL.

JakesBlues
JBMini
JB was dethroned last year but had a competitive team and finished 5th, although only a single rank-point behind Dug in 2nd place in an incredibly tight final finish between 2nd and 5th place.  Brees returns as the franchise player despite the Saints’ offseason problems and Colston joins the saved team as the top saved player.
Best pick: Aaron Hernandez.  4th round pick is a fraction of the cost of Gronkowski and possibly similar performance.  Gronk’s stats were padded last year when Hernandez was injured.
Worst pick: Kam Chancellor.  When you save a decent DB like B Pollard, and when your WRs suck, why draft your 2nd DB as guys like B Lloyd, Steve Smith (Car), Demaryius Thomas, and Miles Austin are still on the board?  Any of those guys would be starting WRs for JB.
Strength: College.  Aplin and Klein have potential to finish #1-2 in PQBFL scoring this year and can easily be trade bait later this season for any other teams who had 2013 in mind rather than 2012.  One of those guys should not be a backup.
Weakness: WRs.  To give you an idea about how shitty these five WRs are, the projected total point difference between the top group in the league (Dec) and the 6th group in the league (Old) is far less than the difference between Old and JB.  Colston is WR1 and he would not start on any other PQBFL team.  WR3 Greg Little would be the worst WR on any other PQBFL team, and let’s not even talk about Boldin and Santana Moss, two has beens who do not belong in a 7 team league at all.  A mind boggling horrible WR squad.

Decepticons
DecMini
Dec hopes to recover from a very disappointing season last year by finishing very far behind the top 5 teams.  Franchise player Jamaal Charles is one of the worst in the PQBFL and brings a lot of question marks to Dec’s team.
Best pick: Andre Johnson.  What a gift from heaven in the 4th round after Wax took two young punks Julio Jones and AJ Green in front of this established veteran.
Worst pick: Von Miller.  It is questionable whether Miller is good enough to even be drafted in the PQBFL, let alone in the 11th round.  Curtis Lofton drafted in the 18th round will quickly become the starter and Miller will see the bench.
Strength: Backups.  Dec is the top team for backups and can sustain injuries. Imagine that: franchise player J Charles is a backup behind Rice and McFadden.  Who has ever seen a franchise player being a backup?  The backup QB is Matt Ryan who could easily finish as one of the best starters in the league.  At the rookie position, it is not clear if Doug Martin or Weeden will start, but both are starter quality material in the PQBFL.
Weakness: Defense.  Dec is expected to have the worst defense in the league without any impact player except perhaps Derrick Johnson.
