Strength: Defense.
Wax has a strong team on offense, but the nod goes to defense
here. P Willis is at the top of the defensive board of
anybody in the league (except Dec). E Berry was the top DB
available too. Weakness: WRs. Top WR
Miles Austin might not even be the top
WR on his own NFL team and backups are all question marks: Knox,
Ochocinco, Manningham, and Garcon. Best Pick: P Willis. Last
year Willis was the first LB off
the board in the 5th round. The year before, first LB taken
in the 4th round. This year Wax got Willis in the 6th round
and he was the second LB taken. Nice catch. Worst Pick: It’s hard to
come up with a bad pick on this
team, but Cedric Benson in the 8th round does not inspire
confidence. It’s not that Benson was taken too
early, perhaps Addai should have been the choice here, but the main
issue is that A Foster is already banged up, MJD had injury issues last
year, J Best even more, so in that situation you need more support from
your RB4 than a guy who might spend the next four months in jail if he
does not lay off the bottle.
FlyingElvis
Strength: WRs. FE lacks an elite WR after trading away
Calvin
Johnson, but still has the best group of 5 WRs in the PQBFL despite the
trade: G Jennings, Bowe, Dez Bryant, Welker, and B Lloyd.
With such potential, FE is bound to have at least one which will
outperform and reach elite status in this squad. Weakness: Backup RBs. At
least FE acquired Blount after the
draft, but that’s still not enough. The team only
has Blount and Tomlinson to back up the starters Rice and
Bradshaw. The other RBs are still looking for jobs.
Best Pick: Dez Bryant. If
he keeps his head on straight, he
could be a top 5 WR easily. Great catch in the 5th
round. Worst Pick: Mayo. Right
after Timmons and Willis were taken,
FE panicked and drafted Mayo way too early. The new scoring
guidelines issued by the NFL regarding tackles and assists means Mayo
will no longer be the outrageous beneficiary of a ridiculous number of
assists when he plays at home. Sneezing next to the ball
carrier will no longer be counted as an assist for Mayo.
Cheat-ville!
Dugongs
Strength: Receivers. After acquiring Calvin Johnson, Dug
has
the top WR duo with WR2 L Fitz. And if that’s not
enough, add Gates and V Davis at TE. The Dugongs will fly
this year. Weakness: RBs. Before
trading away Blount, Dug’s
backup RBs were slightly below average. Now it’s
clearly dead last. After franchise player A Peterson, the
other starter is D Williams. Is he not going to be stuck in a
RB by committee with J Stewart? Backups are Addai and 21st
round pick Reggie Bush. Uh-oh. Best Pick: A Rodgers.
None of the other 1st round picks are
as safe as this one. The guy has no injury history
whatsoever, and if he’s not injured there is no reason to
think he won’t be at the top of the QB rankings with all the
depth the Packers have at WR plus the return of Finley.
He’s the only first round pick without downside. Worst Pick: Ryan
Williams. That’s the
Dugongs’ long-term sin – rookie RBs. At
least Dug sinned only once this year. After trying without
success to rip off the BeaudoinBrothers to get Ingram, the Dugongs
overpaid to draft the first rookie in the 5th round. Look,
Williams is only a backup RB on a bad team, and if there was a year to
draft at another position than RB for rookie, 2011 was it. AJ
Green, Julio Jones, and Greg Little were great options, plus starting
QB Cam Newton.
OldNo7
Strength: RBs. Starters are F Gore and L McCoy. For
backups, nobody can beat the trio of S Jackson (a backup!), Felix
Jones, and Ryan Grant. Weakness: Backup QB.
After Rivers, it’s a bunch of
losers – A Smith, McNabb, C McCoy. Best Pick: Vincent
Jackson. Old got him as the 11th WR
taken. Bank on it, V Jax is top 10 material. Elite
QB, banged up TE, no running game. All ingredients are
there. Worst Pick: LaRon Landry.
Sure, the dude crushed all other
DBs last year. But it’s August and he’s
already talking about needing offseason surgery in 2012. Too
risky to be the first DB off the board, sorry.
BeaudoinBrothers
Strength: WRs. Not only the Bros have the unquestioned top
WR
in Andre Johnson, but after that there are four WRs with potential for
top 10: Boldin, S Holmes, Steve Smith (CAR), and A Collie.
They won’t all explode, but chances are one or two will
surpass their draft status and give Beaud a top notch WR starting
duo. Weakness: QB. Sure Romo
has potential with the receivers he
has. But he cannot be trusted – so far his career
is a disappointment with untimely INTs. Roethlisberger might
get AIDS at any moment, in the whore house, or in jail. As
for Cutler, he takes so many sacks that we cannot count on his health,
and if he survives the sacking regiment of Martz’ offense, he
could still be run out of town by the Chicago fans who hate him. Best Pick: Austin Collie.
Collie was the top WR in the NFL
before getting a major concussion to end his season. If
he’s healthy, there is no reason to think he cannot be a top
WR again and he was the 21st WR taken. Worst Pick: M Turner. A
boring pick in the 2nd round
– a guy on the decline of his career with injury issues the
last two years and on a team looking more and more to throw.
Beaud was simply not willing to wait longer for a RB and draft better
value at other positions.
Mistake.
Spitoons
Strength: College.
Andrew Luck was not only a smart pick for
2011 because he’s a top college QB, but he will also be
useful on Spi’s saved team next year as possibly the top NFL
draft pick and immediate rookie starter. Backup Bryant Moniz
from Hawaii can also light up the scoreboard in a wide-open
offense. Weakness: Backup WRs. Spi
better hope that R Wayne and R
White stay healthy all year, because Sidney Rice does not have a QB
with his new team in Seattle, and then it’s Steve Smith
(ex-NYG), the dude just signed by the Eagles… as if they did
not have enough receivers already! Best Pick: Vick. There
were three franchise QBs, then Rodgers
and P Manning were taken. Vick could be the top QB in the
league this year so very good value in the 2nd round. He was
a candidate for a first round pick. Worst Pick: Browns
defense. Not that it’s critical
for Spi since they saved the Steelers, but the Browns? Spi
should be notified that PQBFL scoring for defensive teams is
inversely proportional to points allowed. Baby Spitoons
should have waited after the draft to ask to eat.
JakesBlues
Strength: Rookie
WRs. AJ Green and G Little are the only
viable WRs on two shitty NFL teams so they will get tons of
looks. Weakness: Defensive
players. Starters are DJ Williams, Vilma,
Tillman, and Dumervil. That my friends is the worst bunch of
starters in the league. Best Pick: Eagles. With
the kind of offense the Eagles have,
opponents will need to play catch up, leaving lots of turnover
opportunities for the defense. With Asomugha signed, this
defense is now top notch. Worst Pick: Ryan Mathews.
It’s bad enough that
Mathews did nothing last year and was outscored by Tolbert.
In addition the turd shows up in camp out of shape and flunks his
physical. And yet JB reached and took him when S-Jax was on
the board. Sometimes it’s better to go with the
veteran, especially if he’s playing in a quickly improving
offense.
Decepticons
Strength: Mmmm… I
am still looking. Perhaps
Dec’s strength is the kickers? Weakness: QB. Matt Ryan is the
worst starting QB and backups Cassel and
Kolb are not exactly comforting. Best Pick: Steve Johnson.
At 22nd WR taken not counting saved
WRs, this is a bargain. Lee Evans’ departure means
Johnson’s targets cannot only go up from the already high
level of 142 last year. If he gets more than 150 targets, he
only needs a slight improvement in QB accuracy to approach or exceed
100 catches. Worst Pick: Lawrence
Timmons. Sure, he beat Willis by a hair
last year (0.3 pt per game). But Dec must have been the only
team ranking Timmons ahead of Willis so no need to take him in the 5th
round. Just wait until after someone else drafts
Willis.
