Week #8

ProfessorMJ finally got out of their 3-week slump in the best possible fashion: they scored a league-high and season-high 188.25 pts to win week #8. CD Lamb was the team leader with 33.25 pts but oddly Prescott did not follow suit with only 14 pts which was modestly below his season average and his weekly projection.  High-prized TE Kelce had done little until week #7, ranking TE11 in the PQBFL but he finally came out of his shell now that so many Chiefs WRs have been injured and he scored 18 pts this week to climb up to a more respectable TE7.  J Cook also had a solid week with 2 TDs and 21 pts while Swift had a long TD and 18.75 pts.  On defense, E Jones has been traded from TEN to SEA and his new home seems to be suitable as he scored 15 pts which was his best score of the season.  DB K Hamilton has not started often for Prof because J Love is normally the starting DB but this week Hamilton was called into action because 3 out of 4 LBs were injured leaving the defensive flex position quite thin.  Hamilton responded well with a sack, 2 passes defended, and one forced fumble for 21 pts.

The GloriousBastards beat both Beaud and Wax to tighten the standings at the top and are now 4 rank-points behind Wax in first place.  Bas had an ok week by most offensive starters but the one that stood out by far was rookie Bo Nix who exploited his juicy matchup against the Panthers to the maximum with 4 TDs no turnover and 30.5 pts.  Purdy was not stellar but he beat a better defense (DAL) and scored 21.5 pts which exceeded his weekly projection.  Bijan and J Chase both scored short TDs while TE McBride had the better stats (9-124) although no TD.  Bas was held back a bit by A Jones and G Pickens who only scored 7.75 pts and 7.5 pts respectively but Bas ended so far behind Prof that it did not really matter.  On MNF the Steelers defense put Beaud at bay with a punt return for a TD to seal second place.

The BeaudoinBrothers finished in third place for the fourth consecutive week and are now challenging Wax in terms of consistency.  The only reason Wax is in first and Beaud is not is because Beaud finished 7th in week #2 but otherwise both teams have finished between 1st and 5th every single week.  This week marked the return to health of C Kupp (12.5 pts) and also Ty Hill got his QB back (9.5 pts).  Both did not have big scores but nonetheless their timing was excellent because both Aiyuk and Higgins missed this week to injury so the contribution of Kupp and Hill was needed.  Rookie Daniels was questionable all week and thankfully in the end he played which was critical for Beaud.  Daniels was held off the end zone all game until the fateful Hail Mary pass to end the game against the overly cocky Bears.  This play alone was the difference for Beaud beating Wax, so Wax fans have been flooding the Bears DB with hate mail after the game.  The other big difference maker between Wax and Beaud was that S Barkley got tackled at the 1-yard line twice and both times Hurts converted for the TD, robbing Wax of the TD which was a 10-point swing between Beaud and Wax both times.  Hurts finished the game with 3 rushing TDs (33.75 pts) and Beaud beat Wax by 8.5 pts.

WaxOnWaxOff scored 155.5 pts this week which was fairly good but the key was losing to both Bas and Beaud so Wax did not feel this week was a favorable outcome.  Wax was all about defense and special teams this week.  Kicker J Elliott made all 7 of his kicks for 12.5 pts and the Broncos defense easily contained the Panthers for 11.5 pts.  Budda Baker and LBs Owusu-Koramoah plus Ivan Pace all scored between 14 pts and 15 pts with solid efforts, the only one who missed the 10-point mark on defense was N Bosa but he had a sack and 9 pts so not bad at all.  It is rather with offense that Wax had problems.  It did not help that rookie Maye got injured early in the game but he had time to score 10.5 pts – he was on his way to a big game but the injury killed Wax’s chances completely.  B Mayfield was decent with 3 TDs considering he was playing without Evans (Bas) and Godwin (Old) but the 2 INTs doomed the Bucs in a close contest against the Falcons.  But no other starter on Wax’s roster hurt the team as much as A Cooper (DK Metcalf was injured): Cooper scored a lowly 1 point: 1 reception for 3 yards.  What the hell.  Wax was lulled into a false sense of security last week because Cooper had a good start with the Bills with 13.25 pts in week #7 but it was a mirage.

FlyingElvis scored 151.75 pts this week but as noted above it was a high scoring week in the league so FE’s score was not good enough to finish in the top half of the standings, instead FE finished right in the middle.  On MNF FE attempted a small comeback and nearly beat Wax thanks to 19.5 pts from TJ Watt but fell short.  The rest of FE’s defense was unimpressive, even DB Branch slowed down with 7 pts and even worse was Maxx Crosby with 3 pts and the Packers with only 3.5 pts.  The two top scorers of the week were guys which had not made much noise this year so far.  Rookie McConkey scored 2 TDs for 24.5 pts to climb to ROO7 in the league.  RB Josh Jacobs was supposed to be a strong play with a better offense in 2024 than last year when he was in Vegas, but it has not worked very well with Jacobs languishing at RB22 in the league prior to this week.  Fortunately Jacobs had by far his best game of the season with 22.25 pts this week so he is slowly getting better, it was the 3rd time in 4 weeks that he scored 12.5 pts or more after being limited to 9.5 pts or less in the first 4 weeks of the season.  RB Etienne missed another game to injury but backup Dobbins was fine as a replacement with 10.5 pts.  Things were not as rosy at WR however.  D Adams being traded to the Jets has not lead to an improvement so far, Adams only scored 6.5 pts against the weak Patriots.  Diggs is the only WR on FE’s roster who is worthy of being a starter but he got injured so things are about to get even worse with Marquise Brown not playing all year and FE having no depth with Mims being useless and Hopkins who similar to Adams has not shown much promise on his new team after the trade to the Chiefs with only 3.25 pts on the bench this week.

The Admirals managed to stay out of the red with 6th place but lost some ground against FE and fell to 3 rank-points behind FE in the standings.  As is often the case, Adm’s best players this week were K Murray (23.5 pts) and J Gibbs (19 pts).  For once LaPorta joined the leaders with a decent game of 13.25 pts.  He’s still ranked as low as TE15 so as the second player drafted overall he’s been a total bust, but that’s now 2 games above 10 pts in three weeks, a modest improvement.  When healthy, franchise player AJ Brown has produced, but not this week when he was limited to 9 pts and was even outscored by rookie WR Worthy who scored a TD and 10.75 pts.  On defense DB McKinney had an INT once again, he leads the NFL with 6 in 8 games which is very impressive.  The rest of the defense was all subpar with everybody scoring less than 10 pts except the Texans who barely exceeded the threshold with 10.5 pts but Adm would have been better off with the Lions defense who scored 17 pts on the bench.

The Decepticons’ hot streak is over.  This week Dec came back to reality with 7th place and also dropped behind Prof in the standings.  It certainly did not help that Jordan Love got injured during the game and only scored 3.5 pts, also affecting Jayden Reed at the same time who could not do better than 4.75 pts.  But there were plenty of other reasons for the poor showing this week which were not related to injuries.  For example, rookie Caleb cooled down considerably with a TD-less performance and road loss in WAS with only 6.5 pts.  Also Drake London had three games of at least 14 pts during Dec’s dream stretch from week 5-6-7 but he only scored 5.5 pts this week.  It was rather TE Pitts who got the attention in that same game, scoring 2 TDs and 23.5 pts in the best game of Pitts’ career.  But there was another black spot in Dec’s lineup.  Franchise player B Hall has not been worth a franchise selection so far, he only scored 5.75 pts and ranks RB20 so not even starter level.

OldNo7 had recently avoided finishing in the red despite injuries, but not this week.  Old had their worst result of the season with 8th place, barely beating Ball to avoid last place.  Old currently leads the PQBFL in injury points and perhaps this will improve because CMC is supposed to come back for the 49ers next game.  This week his injury was not really the reason for finishing 8th because Kyren Williams and Kamara both scored double digits.  The absence of Godwin was felt a bit but even that was possibly not the source of the problem because McLaurin scored 11.25 pts in replacement.  The problem was rather starter Amon-Ra who only scored 7.25 pts; he had a TD but only caught one other pass so his stats were piss-poor.  Burrow had an off-game with 11 pts as he missed the presence of Higgins (Beaud).  Defense was pedestrian with only 2.5 pts from the Bears, 5 pts from Hubbard, and 5 pts from McDuffie.

The Ballers finished last for the first time since week #2 so it had been a while.  Ball almost finished out of the basement when LB Okereke had a strong game on MNF with 7 tackles, 7 assists, half a sack and a forced fumble (plus recovery) for a total of 19.5 pts but more was needed.  Ball had been put behind the 8-ball (no pun intended) on Sunday due to a surprisingly poor game by K Walker with only 7.75 pts which was less than half of his season average up until last week.  He’s still ranked RB4 in the PQBFL so perhaps it was only a fluke.  Teammate RB Javonte Williams was even worse with 4.25 pts – the fluke for him was rather the 19.25 pts he scored in week #7, this week he was back to his normal level of suckness, even against the crappy Panthers defense he could not do better than 17 rushes for 44 yards – only 2.6 yards per carry.  It was the Panthers!  L-Jax had a bumpy game and lost against the Browns but nonetheless scored a meaningful 24.25 pts.  He still leads the PQBFL in scoring but when he’s not above 30, the Ballers are suffering.
