Week #5
After a wobbly week #4, Bas jumped back into the thick of the race
with a win in week #5. Coincidentally Bas becomes the 5th
different team to win, the 5 teams being the 5 in contention and the
other 4 now lagging quite far behind so it’s looking like a 5-team
race. Bas had fireworks at the WR position with 2 TDs each for
J Chase and M Evans for a total of 58 pts between them. The
other big star was rookie QB Nix who had by far his best game of the
season with 24 pts to climb to ROO5 in the leaders at his position
which is more respectable now, after being taken quite early in the
draft as the 4th rookie. The rest of Bas’ offense was very
subpar which is not typical of teams winning any given week – not a
single other player reached double digits. Mahomes came close
with 9.75 pts but nonetheless significantly below his projection.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the Decepticons look like a
completely different team now that they have a healthy QB. J
Love did not reach his projection but 16.5 pts was nonetheless the
difference between 2nd and 5th place this week, so Dec had their
best result of the season so far to climb up to 7th place in the
standings. Dec in effect had two QBs this week because Caleb
had not looked like one yet but he scored 26.75 pts which is almost
his total for the first 4 weeks combined (32.5 pts) so that made a
huge difference. J Taylor was out to injury but he was not
missed with backup Dowdle scoring a TD and gaining more than 100
yards from scrimmage. The other star performer of the week was
Drake London who similarly to Caleb had been quiet but he exploded
for 25.5 pts this week.
The BeaudoinBrothers returned in the blue for the first time since
opening week with 3rd place. Hurts was on bye so Beaud started
Stroud who then had to play most of the game without his WR1 Nico
Collins (Adm) who got knocked out early. Stroud ended the game
with a middling 15.25 pts which was not enough to beat Dec or
Bas. The top two scores were Tee Higgins who is now clearly
fully back to health with his 24 pts this week. Second best
was rookie Daniels who amazingly almost scored 20 pts despite only
having 1 TD and 1 INT so it was not even a great game which
illustrates how high his ceiling is. Beaud once again suffered
from an intra-game injury impacting their final score when kicker
Moody was hurt and the 49ers had to use a different kicker in the
middle of the game, and something similar happened to DL
Wilkins. However unlike last week when Dugger’s injury was
very costly because Beaud finished so close behind Old and Prof,
this week Beaud finished 7.5 pts behind Dec so it’s less clear that
missing a kicker and a DL for part of a game had an impact.
Before MNF OldNo7 was in good position to finish at the top or
perhaps 2nd, but they fell flat on their face at the finish line
with only 5.5 pts from Kamara and 2.5 pts from Olave for a
catastrophic result to make Old drop to 4th place. Old remains
first in the standings because they at least beat Wax this week so
it was the good news, but Beaud and Bas got closer to Old. Old
being first after 5 weeks is impressive considering that CMC still
has not come back from injury, this week perhaps Kamara would not
have started at all if CMC was healthy. Old pulled off an
above average result this week mostly because Burrow exploded for 42
pts to jump from QB6 in the league after 4 weeks to QB3 after this
week’s explosion of 5 TDs. Rookie Brock Bowers also had
something to say about Old beating Wax with a long TD and 21.75
pts. Perhaps Old will not need rookie J Brooks healthy after
all. Also on defense Sam Hubbard was dominant with 7 tackles
(2 for loss), 2 assists, 1 sack, 2 QB hits, and a safety.
For the third time in 5 weeks Wax finished right in the middle in
5th place, but retains second place in the standings because Wax is
the only team which has not finished in the red this year so far so
they have been the most consistent. QB Mayfield was at it
again this week; A Richardson was out to injury but it does not
matter, Mayfield is now Wax’s clear starter. He scored 26.5
points this week to keep Wax competitive. The core positions
of RB-WR-TE were a lot more problematic however. Achane was
injured during the game after only 1.25 pt so it was painful for
Wax. Barkley was on bye and Pacheco is seemingly lost for the
year so Wax was forced to start J McLaughlin who is probably not
PQBFL material. Thankfully he beat his projection due to a
short TD with 7 pts. DK Metcalf was a top 10 WR before this
week but he stunk this time with only 3.75 pts to quickly drop to
WR17. TE Kmet has been doing a fine job while waiting for
Hockenson to be healthy but not this week with only 5.75 pts.
On offense the core position guy who did well was none of the above,
it was instead rookie WR Thomas who scored 20 pts. Wax was
bailed by defense with all 4 individual defenders and the Broncos
team defense scoring a total of 70 between these 5 starters, none of
them scoring less than 9.5 pts.
The Ballers got out of the red for the first time of the season with
6th place thanks to an impressive road win by the Ravens in Cincy
led by 4 TDs by L-Jax and 34 pts. Garrett Wilson was quite
good as well with 23 pts which beat his projection by as much as
L-Jax did. Kittle also scored a TD and was heavily involved
with 8 receptions for a total of 18 pts. So far this year many
TEs have disappointed but Kittle is definitely not part of that
group, in fact he leads all TEs by more than 3 pts per game on
average in front of Goedert (FE). This is the largest margin
of all positions so he’s been the Ballers’ team MVP after 5
weeks. The main reason why the Ballers did not finish in the
top half this week was defense which was simply dreadful. The
best was Okereke with only 5 pts (gulp), the others being almost
equally bad with 4 pts from the Bengals D, 3.5 pts from Sauce and
Judon, and 3 pts from Chris Jones.
FlyingElvis bounced back from last place in week #4, but
barely. This week’s result of 7th place did not cheer the
crowds and now FE find themselves as far as 9 rank-points behind
Prof in the standings so there is a big gap between the top 5 and FE
in 6th place as mentioned above. It is rarely a good sign when
the top scores are on defense, not offense. TJ Watt scored 18
pts and Wagner 15 pts so that was nice but offense was very weak led
by Josh Allen with 16.75 pts which is not that bad but considering
he’s supposed to be the best QB in the land, if he’s 9/30 throwing
the rock then it begs the question, what the heck? 9 completed
passes? Maybe he was temporarily impersonating FE teammate
Bryce Young. It is surprising Allen could reach as high as
16.75 pts which such level of ineptitude and not even scoring a
rushing TD. Etienne was eclipsed by teammate Bigsby which
continues to be a worry going forward; Etienne was limited to 6 pts
despite the Jaguars scoring 37 pts. Part of FE’s problems were
bye week related and injuries, for example Goedert was on bye so FE
started Otton who did little with 5 pts. But even worse was D
Adams missing the game plus other WRs being on bye or injured except
for Diggs (11 pts) and Marvin Mims who had to start. Mims
earning a start in the PQBFL – FE never wished it would come to
this. After 4 weeks Mims was the worst non-injured active WR
in the PQBFL, ranking 47th with an average of 0.7 pt per game.
This week he completely outdid himself with a tremendous 2
pts. LOL
After a rock-solid stretch from weeks 2-4 with 24 rank-points (8 per
week on average), Prof hit the wall this week with 8th place.
And it could have been worse, because J Cook scored a TD, B Robinson
scored twice, Fields had 2 TDs and no turnover, plus Kelce was
finally half decent with 12.5 pts now that more than half of Chiefs’
WRs are hurt. Also defense was not that bad with 14 pts from
Al-Shaair and 19.5 pts from the duo of DBs Hamilton + Love, not to
mention that the Dolphins defense only gave up 10 pts to the
Patriots. But a handful of players killed Prof this week all
by themselves. Deebo Samuel only scored two points and even
worse was a goose egg from Myles Garrett. Ouch. CD Lamb
was not helpful either by significantly underperforming relative to
his projection with 8 pts. It did not help that Nabers was
injured but normally this should not be a big problem with franchise
player M Harrison being the most overpriced luxury backup in the
history of franchise players but he stunk too with only 3.75 pts.
The Admirals finished last for the second time in 3 weeks and
quickly saw their 2024 hopes evaporate during that time frame after
a good start of the season. With Gibbs on bye and other RBs
besides R White being also on bye or injured, Adm only had one
active RBs so they could not expect miracles, but the bigger issue
is that R White is awful, having not topped 9 pts all year and this
week was no different with only 5 pts in a game where the Bucs
scored 30 pts. AJ Brown is still injured but was on bye and as
if things could not get worse Nico Collins got injured after scoring
13.75 pts. LaPorta was on bye which forced a blast from the past
Hunter Henry to start and he was pedestrian with 3.5 pts. Adm
has gobbled up as many Lions as they could during the draft so Aidan
Hutchinson was also on bye, opening the door for Montez Sweat for a
rare start. Might as well not exist. Sweat did not do
anything on the game sheet – zip. Fortunately the other
individual defenders were ok with 30 pts total for D Campbell,
Hines-Allen, and McKinney who had an INT.
