Week
#13
The red-hot GloriousBastards had not won since week #1 but thanks to
an impressive 26.25 pt effort by J Chase on MNF even without his
regular QB, Bas made a Glorious comeback and beat Old by one point
for the win. This was the 4th straight week in the blue for GB
as they earned 31 rank-points during that time frame, more than Old
with 30 rank-points. Bas made a complete mockery of the
critical comments on their trade made last week. Who needs Ju
Herbert? Purdy scored 38 pts against the Eagles this week and
leapfrogged Herbert in the QB rankings. Purdy is now QB4 vs
Herbert QB6 so perhaps Bas traded their backup QB after all, not
their starter. Also Conner and Mike Evans paid immediate (big)
dividends with 20.25 pts from Conner and 24 pts from M Evans.
Bas has now passed Prof in the standings to take a small lead in 3rd
place but the road to second place would be quite a challenge
because Bas is 14 rank-points behind.
OldNo7 finished second for the third straight week but the best news
is that Old beat Beaud by 4 spots to flip a 2 rank-point deficit in
the standings into a 2 rank-point lead in the standings. In
total points Old only leads 2006-1998 so the tie-breaker will most
likely belong to Beaud so Old must keep up the pace. The other
good news for Old is that this week was the last week with college
players so Old not having a college player to start will no longer
be a drag starting in week #14 which means the outlook for Old looks
very good for the final stretch and the team remains injury-free
except for Cousins which is not needed anyway with the continued
success of Prescott who scored 30.5 pts this week. CMC and
Kamara scored 3 TDs together, Ty Hill scored 2 long TDs of his own,
and Amon-Ra added one. Old’s core players are unmatched so
far: Dak is QB2 in the league, CMC is RB1, Kamara RB4, Hill WR1 and
AmonRa WR6. Rookie Levis has not even gotten started yet and
failed to reach 10 pts this week again and was outscored by
Smith-Njigba on the bench. If Levis takes off and if Old
avoids injuries, Old might celebrate their first PQBFL title a few
weeks from now.
The recent improvement of WaxOnWaxOff continued this week with 3rd
place, beating FE for the fourth straight week and cutting FE’s lead
by 9 rank-points during this period, down from 16 to 7 so Wax still
has a shot to finish in the middle of the standings.
Stafford’s success is part of the reason why, Stafford scored 27.25
pts this week and anyway having Burrow as starter was not helping
that much because he had a poor season (QB17). Now Stafford
even ranks above Burrow (QB16). Wax’s injury woes at the
rookie position were mitigated this week because rookie DL Will
Anderson had two sacks in the Texans’ win and he scored 16.5
pts. Anderson ranks ROO14 which is not great, but next year as
a regular DL he will have decent value. Wax finished this week
only 7 pts behind Bas in first and 6 pts behind Old in second, and
this small margin could have easily been covered if Wax had a
healthy LB to start. Unfortunately two of them were on bye and
two were injured so Wax had a goose egg and was forced to start 2
DBs who only combined for 14 pts (Curl + Baker). So it was one
more week where injuries were costly.
The Decepticons’ outlook to finish 7th on the season remains as firm
as it’s been after losing against Wax but beating Adm so Dec is now
exactly 12 rank-points away from both 6th and 8th place. This
week was more about playing trouble makers with the top of the
standings, and in an ironic turn of events who else but Joe Mixon to
score 2 TDs on MNF for Dec to overcome Beaud after the trade
consummated last week. Dec had focused the entire 2023 draft
on the future and this week two rookies made the headlines, Sam
LaPorta (now TE) scored 22 pts and Achane is now healthy and scored
18.5 pts which were great results for the forward-looking
Decepticons. As a TE LaPorta would rank TE4 and in fact only
0.1 pt per game behind Kittle (FE) so almost TE3 which is prime
saved player quality, if not cut player material. Same for
Achane who might even be worthy of franchise player consideration if
he’s healthy and if Mostert does not stay with the Dolphins next
year.
FlyingElvis finished in 5th place this week, lost ground against Wax
but moved closer to Prof in the standings. Josh Allen was on
bye so FE had modest expectations but Jordan Love was actually quite
decent with 25.5 pts against the above average Chiefs defense.
Love almost never starts for FE so he’s not getting much attention
but he now ranks QB9 in the league so he’s more of a starter than a
backup. In fact he just moved ahead of Mahomes (QB10) after
outplaying him in that game. One who is not about to become a
starting quality QB any time soon is Bryce Young who continues to
disappoint. This week he only scored 3.25 pts – his weekly
projection seems to be somewhat elevated every week and yet he
underperform with regularity. His average of 8.1 pts per game
is dreadful, not only by ROO standards (13th) but even worse for a
QB where he would be QB23, only beating a handful of guys who lost
their job (Mac Jones, Garoppolo, Tannehill) or who are injured (D
Jones, A Rodgers).
After finishing 1 or 1.5 rank-point ahead/behind Old for 6 weeks out
of 7, the BeaudoinBrothers took one on the chin and lost to Old by 4
spots. D Montgomery scored a TD but was outscored by Mixon by
10.25 pts so the recent trade cost Beaud two ranks this week.
The intra-game injury to Stevenson hurt Beaud in a week where
results were fairly tight and Stevenson exited after scoring only
0.25 pt. Rookie Stroud did not have a stellar game with only 1
TD and scored 13.25 pts which was less than his projection.
The Jaguars defense had a chance on MNF to mitigate the damage but
they fell flat on their face by allowing 34 pts against the
injury-depleted Bengals in a double-whammy of letting Mixon run and
score twice. WRs are what prevented Beaud from a deeper fall
with both Aiyuk and Pittman scoring a TD although Pittman’s required
OT so the Bros lucked out by earning the benefit of extra time.
ProfessorMJ finished in the red for the third straight week in a
stunning turn of events. It’s not even clear that injuries can
be blamed because Prof’s lone injured player M Andrews was on bye
and anyway E Engram was the least of Prof’s worries with 20 pts this
week. In fact Prof earned a total of zero injury points this
week and were the only team in the PQBFL who was not missing anybody
except for players on bye. While in theory Prof was
injury-free, in practice it was not the case because DL Garrett
played with a bad shoulder and it was clear he was not 100% and
scored a goose egg. Prof would have been better off if he had
taken the week off. Recently acquired Ju Herbert stunk against
the Pats D with only 6.75 pts and backup Geno Smith exploded for
31.5 pts on the bench against the stout Dallas defense.
Sometimes the results of trades are simply not what was anticipated.
After some degree of success in weeks #11-12, Adm returned to 8th
place this week but beat the Ballers to extend their lead to 5
rank-points over Ball in the standings. K Murray had his worst
game since returning from injury with only 8.25 pts despite the
Cards winning in impressive fashion on the road against the
Steelers. D Henry showed that he still has gas left in the
tank by leading all Adm’s starters this week with 22 pts. The
leader on defense for Adm was almost as good with Winfield scoring
21 pts thanks to 1 sack, 3 passes defended, and 8
tackles+assists. Winfield and Crosby are the two stars of
Adm’s team, each leading their position in scoring, but Crosby was
on bye this week.
The Ballers finished dead last for the nauseating 5th straight week
and each good news seems to be more than offset by bad news so Ball
still could not get out of last. How in the world can a team
finish last even when a starting WR scores 3 TDs and 32.75 pts like
Deebo Samuel? And Goff was not bad at all with 20 pts.
Also rookie R Rice reached double digits and beat his projection not
to mention that C Kupp scored a TD. Well the problem is that
defense was beyond horrendous with only 15.5 pts from the five
starters combined, led by LB Jewell with 6 pts, Sauce Gardner only 4
pts, the Bengals 2.5 pts, C Jones 2 pts, and last but not least, the
new king for most awful defensive player in the PQBFL (excluding
those who are not playing at all): M Golden scored 1 pt, which
exceeds his score from weeks #10-12 combined (zero!).
Previously Golden was ahead of John Johnson III (Old) but the latter
scored 12.5 pts this week which left Golden alone as the bottom
dweller of the league.
