Week #6
The BeaudoinBrothers won for the second time of the year but only
gained a single rank-point over Wax so they remain moderately far
from the top. The Bros were not dominant but week #6 being the
lowest scoring week of the season so far due to bye weeks, it only
took 153.75 pts for Beaud to win. R Wilson did enough on MNF
with 1 TD and no turnover to secure first place. The Bros have
great RB depth with M Sanders, J Robinson, and R Stevenson who are
all in the top 15 RBs and therefore starting RB material, so missing
D Henry on bye week was not too painful. That said, the
unexpected cherry on top was that the Bros got lucky that D Harris
(Adm) got injured exactly the week that Henry was on bye which paved
the way for R Stevenson to start and he scored 19.5 pts for the
Bros’ best score this week, tied with M Pittman who was also
benefiting from an injury to J Taylor (FE) and forced M Ryan to
throw a whopping total of 58 times and even N Hines (Ball) was
injured too so Pittman took the opportunity to catch 13 balls in
that game. Defense was more shaky for Beaud, notably Logan
Wilson started but only scored 4 pts with regular starter L David
benched and he scored 14 pts so it almost turned out to be a costly
mistake.
WaxOnWaxOff did not win but with second place this week it was the
4th time in 6 weeks that Wax finished top 2 so there has been no let
up. Wax almost won for a third straight week despite TJ Hock
being on bye, Nick Bosa missing the game to injury, and Josh Allen
who scored only 3 pts in the first 29.5 minutes of his game (0 TD, 1
turnover) before scoring a TD with 16 seconds remaining in the first
half and then playing much better in the second half to finish with
29.25 pts. Another bright spot was the continued emergence of
rookie Breece Hall who rushed for over 100 yards in Green Bay and
scored. Hall now averages 11.9 pts per game, only a hair
behind D Lloyd (Beaud) and C Olave (Bas) who are at 12.0 pts
each. Wax missed first place this week due to one critical
call: E Elliott was benched because of his matchup against the
Eagles but Elliott had a decent game with 13 pts, and instead Wax
started AJ Dillon against the Jets but the Packers did not impress
against the Jets and Dillon did not do much with only 4.25 pts so
that decision alone was the difference with first place because Wax
got beat by only 4.75 pts.
The Ballers finished in the blue for the second time of the season
to distance ProfMJ behind, and move closer to Dec in 7th
place. Ball could have won this week if not for missing a RB2
to start: Hines and Patterson were injured, Akers does not want to
play for the Rams anymore, and Zack Moss was a healthy
scratch. With only one healthy and active RB, D Cook had to
carry the load and was held in check during 57 minutes by the
Dolphins defense until he scored on a 53-yard run with 3 minutes
remaining and ended the game with 83 yards from scrimmage: he only
had 30 yards total if not for that single run. The other
reason Ball missed first place is that A Rodgers did not capitalize
on his matchup with the Jets and only scored 10.5 pts. Could
it be that J Goff will start over Rodgers sooner rather than
later? Goff was on bye but he’s been outscoring Rodgers by a
mile so far this season, 19.3 (QB6) for Goff against 12.7 (QB16) for
Rodgers. Goff comes back from his bye and his WRs are getting
healthier so it will be interesting to see what the Ballers’ coach
does at QB.
The GloriousBastards were well positioned to win week #6 on MNF with
Herbert going against R Wilson (Beaud) but Herbert was held
scoreless and had one INT and finished the game with a season-low
5.5 pts, which was the first time in 2022 that he failed to reach
double digits. Not only did Bas fail to finish first, but Bas
also fell behind Wax and Ball, and also almost finished behind Old
so Herbert’s bad game had significant consequences. Bas’ other
QB rookie Pickett was concussed and exited with 8.25 pts and the
missed time turned out to be crucial given the tight
standings. Bas’ receivers did all the work this week, led by
27.5 pts from J Chase who scored twice, then G Davis scored 13.5 pts
in the absence of D Adams on bye, and TE Gesicki did even better
with 19.25 pts with Freiermuth on bye as well. On defense D
Davis was strong with 17 pts but his Saints teammate C Jordan
cancelled Davis’ outperformance with only 3 pts of his own.
With the Steelers on the bench, the Vikings did well with 10.5 pts
but this was cancelled by DB J Bates only scoring 4 pts with M
Fitzpatrick injured.
OldNo7 finished in 5th place for the third time in the last 4 weeks
with 136.25 pts, only 17.5 pts away from first place. Through
6 weeks Old has the second best strength of starters in the PQBFL
behind Wax, but Old’s coaching efficiency ranks dead last.
Old’s coach could be excused this week for benching LB A Singleton
because at times Singleton was not even part of the game plan by the
Broncos, but this week Singleton was all over the field with 19
tackles 2 assists and 25.5 pts on the bench. Instead Old
started Werner (6 pts) and D Campbell (8 pts) both of which failed
to reach their projection. Unlike the LB position, it was more
debatable to start Wentz at Chicago who ended the game with only
3.25 pts while T Lawrence on the bench scored 22 pts. One can
argue that Wentz breaking his finger was not predictable but
nonetheless the choice of QB or LB was the difference between 5th
place and 1st place. The one position where Old did not have
to think about starters was RB with CMC and Kamara both starting as
usual and reaching double digits but neither of them scored a TD so
they were merely ok rather than boosting Old to the top.
FlyingElvis finished a season-low 6th place and also season low
127.75 pts and dropped from 7 rank-points away from Wax to now 11
rank-points behind. Very few teams have ever overcome a 10+
rank-point deficit to win the league in previous years. It
could have been worse for FE because Dec was not far behind and the
FE coach put rookie Alec Pierce in the starting lineup at the last
minute and benched G Wilson which was a great move with Pierce
scoring the game-winning TD late while Wilson was limited to 1
reception for 8 yards. The coach also benched Mostert (4 pts)
on Sunday morning in favor of DK Dobbins which did not turn out as
well because Dobbins was dreadful with only 15 total yards and no TD
but that call only partially offset the rookie starting call; both
decisions taken together was a net positive and the difference
between 6th place and 7th place. Not only Dobbins had a poor
game, but L Jackson did as well with only 13.25 pts, barely more
than half his weekly projection in a game the Ravens were supposed
to do well on offense against the Giants. L Jackson had two
turnovers in the last 3 minutes of the game to cost his team the
win. On MNF Ekeler tried to save the day and scored a TD but
the Chargers did not have much success against the Broncos defense
so yardage was limited and Ekeler did not reach the century
mark.
The Decepticons could not follow up week #5’s second place with
another positive result, this week Dec finished 7th in a season
quickly going up in smokes. After weeks of underperformance,
Dec’s coach benched franchise player N Harris who ended up with a
season-high 9 pts on the bench, which is not that great anyway but
it was 1 point better than starter Montgomery with 8 pts.
Fournette has been the only reliable RB on the team with no worse
than 6 pts all year and this week he was adequate with 14.25
pts. After 6 weeks Fournette ranks RB10 which is great for RB2
but not good enough for RB1 which is what Harris was supposed to be,
not Fournette. For the first time this season Kupp did not
score a TD, except for week #4 when he had a season-high 14
receptions so his score that week was great anyway (20 pts).
No such elevated stats this week, I mean 7-80 and 17 yards rushing
would be good for most WRs but for Kupp that meant underperforming
his weekly projection by more than 7. Lockett was below his
projection by even more due to a poor game of only 2 receptions for
17 yards in a game where Geno Smith was throwing more to the TE than
the WRs so at least Dec benefited with Fant starting and scoring
8.25 pts. QB Mahomes had a modestly subpar day with 20 pts, he
could lead the offense with some success but his 2 INTs were the
difference between being ahead of projections and below
projections. On defense the Rams were dominant by holding the
Panthers to only 3 pts, but LB Baker only registered one tackle and
nothing else, despite playing 100% of defensive snaps.
ProfMJ’s nightmare season continued this week by failing to reach
100 points and Prof finished 8th, far behind Ball so now Prof has
increasingly high chances of finishing the season dead last by a
significant margin after dominating 2021 by a similar margin.
Prof tried to shop Brady before the week started, but his
performance on the field against an injury-depleted Steelers squad
would not give comfort to potential trade partners with Brady
finishing the game with 12.5 pts and lost the game when he could not
connect on a 2-point conversion. At least Burrow on the bench
exploded for 37 pts so for week #7 and beyond at least Prof has a
viable QB who is back on track. However for this week, even if
Prof had started Burrow it would not have made any difference
because Prof finished so far behind Dec. There was no such
bench depth at RB this week for Prof. With both J Conner and J
Williams injured, D Henderson was forced into the starting lineup
but at least he was taking advantage of the Cam Akers saga to get a
growing share of carries for the Rams. Unfortunately he only
had 3.6 yards per carry but he scored a TD so his final result of
9.25 pts matched his projection. It was not the case for
injured player replacement Jeff Wilson who scored in negative
territory due to a lost fumble and the 49ers playing from behind and
throwing rather than running the ball. At WR it was similar to
the RB situation: K Allen missed due to injury and both M Evans and
D Johnson stunk with 6 pts and 6.75 pts respectively.
The Admirals finished last for the first time since week #10 last
year which coincidentally was the starting point of a hot stretch
from weeks #11-18 where Adm was the best team in the PQBFL.
Adm can only hope that the same will happen in 2022 as the coach
will whip the players’ butt for their poor week #6. It was the
first time this season that any team scored less than 90 pts - Adm
ended with only 84.5 pts. Part of it was injuries, for example
with both D Harris and R Penny out, Adm had no choice but to start
Chubb as normal but Gainwell as RB2, because RoJo was a healthy
scratch again and M Mack is not even in the NFL anymore.
Gainwell was poor with only 2 points, but the even bigger problem
was not injury related with Chubb scoring only 5.75 pts which was by
far his worst game of the year, coming at a bad time. Chubb
remains RB1 in the league so far but his lead over Ekeler (FE) has
narrowed to less than 2 pts per game. The other major problem
was on defense with J Bosa injured plus Crosby+Martinez+Byard on bye
which left Adm with only 3 active defensive players, one short of
the minimum. None of the active players lit up the scoreboard
with Winfield being the only one to reach 10 pts but he hit 10 pts
on the nose rather than exceed it. Team defense was even worse
with only 4 pts from the Colts who barely avoided a home loss
against the Jaguars. At the rookie position C Watson was also
injured but it’s not like he’s been doing much with an average of
4.1 pts per game, however it’s still better than backup Skyy Moore
who started and scored 2 pts this week.
