Week #3

In what turned out to be a quite low scoring week, defense ruled the day and this is what led the Bros to their first win of the season.  Only two starters for Beaud scored more than 20 pts and both were on defense.  R Smith had 23 pts by tackling everything in sight plus a key INT with one minute left deep in the Texans’ territory which set up an easy game-winning FG.  In addition, the Broncos defense frustrated the 49ers all game long and scored 20.5 pts although part of it was a safety which we could not really give a lot of credit to the defense as it was more Garoppolo’s own mistake by stepping out of bounds in the end zone.  Even at the rookie position the Bros made some damage defensively with Devin Lloyd having his third double-digit game of the year, this time with a season-high 15 pts which included an INT.  On offense most starters scored within a point of their weekly projection: Kelce, D Carr, AJ Brown, Pittman, and even the kicker Succop was on the nose with his projection too.  Only D Henry beat his projection with 16.75 pts to bring some life back to his former top RB self, but Mixon was limited to only 3 pts.

After two mediocre weeks, FlyingElvis finished 2nd in week #3 to jump up to 3rd place in the standings.  FE had a relatively comfortable lead going into MNF in 2nd place but Wax made a comeback and it required a TD in the 4th quarter by CD Lamb for FE to re-take the lead over Wax barely, with FE beating Wax 149 to 148.  Lamb’s 17.25 pts were topped by 21 pts from the other WR M Brown who is temporarily benefiting from a lack of alternatives to throw to for K Murray until other WRs come back from injuries or suspension.  The FE coach had the courage of benching L Jackson in favor of Hurts at the last minute, and it nearly turned badly because Jackson outscored Hurts 39 to 29.75 pts but fortunately FE would have finished 2nd anyway regardless of the starting QB.  FE’s franchise RBs continued to be a problem this week with only 9 pts from Taylor despite the Colts win, and only 4.25 pts from Ekeler as the Chargers got blown away by a poor Jaguars team.  At RB9 Taylor does not have a terrible start although more was expected of him, but Ekeler ranking RB29 is a major problem.  TE Kittle came back from injury after missing games 1 and 2 but he did not make a splash with only 5.25 pts in his return this week.  On defense, A Donald scored 11 pts which is more than what he did in games 1-2 combined, and the best was DB D James with 11.5 pts who is climbing back towards the top of the DB rankings (currently DB6) where he was projected to be before the season started.

WaxOnWaxOff has been the most consistent team in the PQBFL so far and predictably ranks #1 after three weeks, having finished not lower than 4th place.  This week Wax finished 3rd and barely missed on second place.  We recently wondered if Josh Allen would ever score less than 25 pts, well this week he did which explains why Wax did not finish higher.  Allen only scored 2 TDs, had three fumbles and lost one of them, but he had 400 passing yards and 47 rushing yards to salvage an acceptable statistical day in the loss with 22.5 pts.  The other main reason why Wax could not beat FE was the surprising game by Ju Jefferson of only 3 receptions for 14 yds against the weak Lions defense when the Vikings scored 28 pts.  WR Kirk has actually outscored Jefferson this week and on the season with 14.5 pts this time, and currently ranks WR7 in the PQBFL.  RBs Barkley and E Elliott both scored on MNF for a combined 28.75 pts and in that same game the Cowboys defense also beat their projection with 11.5 pts but in the end it was just short to beat FE.  The best individual defender for Wax this week was Myles Jack with 12 pts who continues to provide decent level of production in the absence of TJ Watt.

The Decepticons finished a season-high 4th place to improve on their slow season start.  Similar to Beaud, Dec got the job done mostly on defense this week with almost 60 pts combined for the 4 IDPs and all of them scoring 10 pts or more.  The leader was DL Hendrickson with 2.5 sacks of old man immobile Flacco and 4 QB hits for a total of 19 pts.  LB J Baker had a very poor season start with an average of 4.0 pts per game after 2 weeks, but the coach stuck with him and it paid off with Baker going off for 17.5 pts this week.  Offense was quite rough for Dec, first off D Montgomery got injured early and only had time to score 0.75 pts and to rub salt in the wound, backup K Herbert (Bas) exploded for 26 pts so clearly Dec could have gotten that level of production if not more, had the injury not occurred.  Fournette was not injured but he had another pedestrian day with 6.75 pts and the Bucs offense cannot seem to be able to find its groove; this time the Bucs lost at home and did not score a TD until the last few seconds of the game and it was not Fournette who got the call from the 1-yard line.  Mahomes also had a disappointing day with only 1 TD and 14.5 pts in a loss against the previously winless Colts.  Even C Kupp underperformed this week, he scored a TD again but only caught four short passes for 44 yds which is his lowest receiving yardage since Stafford arrived as QB.

After a poor week #1 following by a week #2 first place, Old settled in the middle of the standings this week with 5th place.  The absence of Dak stung for the first time of the year with Wentz only scoring 5.75 pts as a replacement, although the good news is that T Lawrence continues to make progress and scored 26 pts on the bench against an above average defense (Chargers).  Both Wentz and Lawrence have been starter level caliber so far (QB6 and QB9) but Old will need to do a good job at picking the right starter going forward.  Like many other teams Old had more success on defense, the leader being L Sneed with 14.5 pts, followed by the 49ers defense with 12.5 pts which deserved a better outcome after holding the Broncos to only 9 pts but losing the game.  Old could have done better if they had started either J Davis (12 pts) or D Campbell (16.5 pts) instead of Singleton at defensive flex because Singleton seemed to have been benched by the Broncos – all three of his tackles were on special teams.  Offense was poor for Old except for M Andrews who scored twice for 23.25 pts, but Ty Hill had a bad day with 2-33 for only 3.5 pts which was more than a 90% decrease from what he did in week #2 (37.5 pts).  Kamara continues to be a headache for Old’s coach, after only 3.75 pts in week #1 and missing week #2 to injury, Kamara again did not do much and even lost a fumble which led to a Panthers TD.

The Ballers finished 6th this week by losing out against Old by a single point and this caused Ball to drop from 7th to 8th in the standings.  In a week where points were at a premium, C Patterson stood out with 153 yds from scrimmage and a TD for a total of 18.75 pts.  Surprisingly he moved up to RB5 in the PQBFL despite the Falcons not clicking on all cylinders on offense.  WRs Diggs and St.Brown slowed down this week, dropping from a whopping 68.25 pts combined in week #2 to only 20 pts combined this week, but it was mostly because they did not score a TD; otherwise they remained quite involved in the offense with 7 and 6 receptions, respectively.  Unlike the starting WRs, D Cook scored a TD and fell just short of 100 rushing yards but he lost a fumble to finish below projections at 10 pts.  The same can be said of A Rodgers who had 2 TDs and led the Packers to an important road win against a tough defense but his INT is what pushed him below projections with 15.5 pts.  Rookie RB K Walker was the only non-injured rookie for Ball and the problem was that the Seahawks threw a lot more than they ran and starter Penny got most of the carries (14 vs 3).  Unlike other PQBFL teams defense was poor for Ball, the Bucs D did not have a single sack of turnover, and Ball started 2 DLs Quinn and Golden who only scored 4 pts combined.

ProfessorMJ finished in the bottom three for the third straight week in a fast sinking season which is a complete reversal of the 2021 dominance.  Prof had no startable college player because one was injured and the other attended the birth of his child and missed the game.  Etienne earned 75 yds from scrimmage but in a game where the Jaguars crushed the Chargers more was expected than only 6.5 pts.  With James Robinson (Beaud) climbing to RB2 in the PQBFL it’s clear Etienne is simply a backup for Jax so even his 2023 value is a question mark for Etienne who was ranked ROO1 in the pre-season by most people.  Prof surprisingly benched Brady and Burrow in favor of Cousins, which is a sign that the season is not going very well.  Cousins was ok with 20.5 pts against the Lions and he outscored Brady (14 pts) but not Burrow (28 pts).  RBs continue to be an utter catastrophe for Prof, this week starters Ja Williams (5 pts) and Swift (3.75 pts) both had poor games, even backups Conner (4.75 pts) and D Henderson (1.25 pts) were bad on the bench.  It’s mind blowing that the best two performing RBs on Prof’s roster were actually the RB5-6 with Mattison scoring 8.5 pts and Pollard scoring 8.75 pts.  At WR it was barely better with K Allen being injured and M Evans suspended.  D Johnson started by default with 13.5 pts which was ok but Cooks only scored 3 pts.  One rare good news was that TE Pitts outscored his projection with 9.25 pts this week which was by far better than the 2.75 pts he scored in both weeks 1 and 2.

Adm was leading the PQBFL after two weeks tied with Wax but fell flat with barely more than 100 pts this week to drop to 4th in the standings tied with OldNo7.  The problems on offense were numerous for Adm, first of all 2/3 rookies were injured which forced Skyy Moore in the starting lineup and he did not even catch a single pass and muffed a punt to end the game at negative 3 pts.  The Rams have a good defense, but who would have thought that K Murray would not even score a single TD at home?  Murray was limited to 10.75 pts.  N Chubb was a rare bright spot with 14.25 pts and he’s currently the best RB in the PQBFL with an average of 17.1 pts per game.  D Harris scored a TD again but this time backup Stevenson scored as well, in addition to getting more carries (12 to 11) and more receptions (4 to 2) so it’s becoming more ominous for Harris’ outlook.  WR Waddle had over 100 receiving yards but did not score against the Bills and Deebo Samuel did not score either and likewise failed to crack the 10-point mark, with 9.75 pts for Samuel and 9.5 pts for Waddle.  Defense was not great for Adm or specifically what relates to the Chargers because they got crushed by the Jaguars and did not get a sack or a turnover for a goose egg, not to mention that LB Joey Bosa got injured after scoring only 1 pt which made matters worse for Adm in that game.  Even Devin White was poor this week with only 5 pts.  It was the opposite for Maxx Crosby who was in top shape with 18.5 pts and he now leads all DLs in the league after three weeks.

The GloriousBastards have been sliding hard and fast since week #1 when they scored a league-high 200.75 pts for the win, down to a league-low 91.25 pts to visit the basement and last place in week #3.  How could a team that could be so dominant fall so low, part of it is Herbert played injured this week and was limited to 10.25 pts despite playing against a subpar Jax defense.  J Chase and D Adams both scored this week, but they could not even reach 60 yards from scrimmage combined and Chase lost a fumble so their stats were horrible.  RB A Jones had a tall order against the Bucs defense but splitting carries exactly 50/50 with Dillon can be painful if Jones does not score which was the case this week, and similar to Chase he also lost a fumble to end the game with a paltry 0.75 pt.  Thankfully A Gibson scored because his stats were also bad with only 40 total yards.  TE Freiermuth barely did better with 41 yards but no score so his 4 pts was less than half of his projection.  So far he ranks TE9 in the PQBFL so barely starter material while backup Gesicki is near the bottom at TE18 so no help is on the way.  Defense has also slowed down considerably with DB Fitzpatrick showing he’s human with only 4 pts but remains DB1 in the PQBFL despite his off game.  The Steelers defense was also nothing special by giving up 23 pts and losing to the Browns and finished with only 3 pts to slide to DEF7 for the season.  Last but not least, what to make of star LB M Parsons who could only score 3 pts against the Giants on MNF, thankfully he hit the QB twice but he did not even get a single tackle all game – only one assist.
