Week #2

OldNo7 bounced back from a poor week #1 with a dominant week #2 win with almost 190 pts so Dak was not missed, and it was all the more surprising that CMC was not even the main engine like he used to be for Old, by scoring only 10.5 pts.  Wentz was playing from behind against the Lions most of the game and was able to put up decent stats with 26.75 pts.  Old’s point leader was by far Ty Hill who showed he can light up the scoreboard with someone other than Mahomes throwing the rock, by catching two bombs for TDs and almost 200 receiving yards for 37.5 pts which was a huge improvement from his pedestrian week #1.  The same can be said of M Andrews who did not do much in the opening week with 7.5 pts but scored 19.25 pts this week to take the lead as PQBFL’s best TE with 0.25 pt ahead of Kelce.  While Hill and Andrews are expected to be key contributors for Old, the most favorable surprise was rookie Drake London who scored a TD and caught 8 balls for 19.25 pts to jump in the top 3 rookies so far, just one notch below teammate J Dotson on Old’s bench who is ROO2 in the league, making one of them possibly trade bait.  The only two which left to be desired among Old’s starters were M Gordon (4.25 pts) and LB D Campbell 4 pts but Old did not need more production from them anyway.

The Admirals finished second this week and are now tied with Wax at 14 rank-points at the top of the standings.  Adm scored a total of 9 TDs not counting college this week, with three of them coming from N Chubb alone who finished the game with 25.25 pts.  Waddle only scored 2 TDs but his stats were better than Chubb so he outshined him with 30.5 pts.  After a wobbly start, Waller was better in week 2 with a TD of his own and a double-digit score.  K Murray had some problems again this week but he came through when it mattered late in the game after being down 20-0 at halftime to lead the Cards to an OT win and salvaged a respectable 20.25 pts, less than one point from his projection.  Similarly D Harris was not dominant from start to finish but he scored a critical TD for the Pats to seal the win and finished with 12.25 pts.  Adm could have won week #2 if Deebo Samuel had a better game, 4 carries and 5 catches is simply not going to cut it especially if he does not find the end zone so he failed to reach 10 pts this week.  Defense was mediocre this week for Adm except for D White’s 19.5 pts, particularly the Colts defense getting smoked by the Jaguars and had no sack and no turnover.

The Ballers’ bounce back this week was almost as impressive as Old’s with 3rd place.  Ball was already set up for at least an average or above average week before MNF but with a huge game from S Diggs, Ball could beat both Wax and FE at the finish line.  Diggs destroyed the Titans with 12-148-3 by fulling taking advantage of Gabe Davis’ injury so he was the sole focus for Josh Allen.  All those points scored by Wax’s QB were nullified by Ball, and then some, with Diggs outscoring J Allen 38.25 pts to 36.25 pts.   Tee Higgins was benched this week and Ball did not miss a beat, because A St.Brown came off the bench to score 30 pts and now sits at WR5 in the league.  He was expected to be one of the best backup WRs in the PQBFL but now it looks like he might be firmly into starter territory, making Higgins expendable.  Both starting WRs were able to make up from poor RB play with only 3.25 pts from C Patterson and even worse, 3 pts from D Cook.  Ball had a decent week on defense but it was solely due to the Bucs defense who scored 25.5 pts including a TD against the Saints on a pick-6, while the 4 individual starters combined barely outscored the Bucs alone (26.5 vs 25.5).  Rookie was a modest improvement in week 2 compared to week 1 when everybody missed to injury, this week K Walker played a bit with 4 rushes for 10 yds which was not much, but similar to starter Penny who had 6 rushes for 15 yds so in a game where the script could be more oriented on the ground, at least there can be optimism that Walker can produce something notable.

WaxOnWaxOff finished 4th and took over first place in the standings tied with Adm and in front of week #1 winner Bas.  Josh Allen’s 36.25 pts on MNF was a good effort and allowed Wax to overcome FE but as mentioned above lost against Ball so it was a push.  Wax needed more from Ju Jefferson in the second MNF game but he was limited to 8.25 pts.  Wax was expected to be weak at WR2 but C Kirk might turn out to be one of the biggest bargains of the draft.  He scored 2 TDs this week for 20.75 pts and currently ranks WR8 in the PQBFL, not bad for a 15th round pick.  Rookie B Hall scored a TD so his 11 pts were much better than his poor week 1 game with only 2 pts and improved his odds that he will be able to have a decent season, he is absolutely necessary to Wax’s success because Wax’s three other rookies scored a goose egg in both weeks 1-2 so the cupboard is completely bare with no viable backup for the moment.  Wax’s RBs were less impressive this week with Barkley only scoring 7.25 pts and AJ Dillon going back to playing second fiddle behind A Jones (Bas) with 7 pts.  On defense N Bosa was the top scorer with 15 pts and he is unsurprisingly DL1 in the league after two weeks.

FlyingElvis scored 160 pts which is often good for top 3 but this week it was only worth 5th place.  L Jackson was on the losing end of a huge shootout against the Dolphins with 45.75 pts and squandered a 35-14 lead in the 4th quarter.  At the rookie position, G Wilson’s 8 pts was not bad in week 1, but it was in week 2 that he opened eyes.  He had already scored a TD earlier in the game and then he scored the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining after the Jets recovered an onside kick to give them a second life.  FE’s WRs were both middling this week with 10.25 pts from M Brown and 11 pts from Lamb, actually both were outscored by TE Irv Smith who did well in Kittle’s absence with 12.75 pts which was far ahead of his projection.  On defense nobody could hit 10 pts except for D James who scored exactly 10 and no more, everybody else was below projections notably the Ravens defense giving up 42 pts to the Dolphins.  But FE’s underperformed at RB even more than defense this week with high prized franchise players J Taylor and Ekeler combining for only 13 pts while their weekly projection was almost 30 pts together.  After 2 weeks J Taylor ranks RB7 which is adequate but Ekeler is languishing at RB25 which is not acceptable for a player of his caliber.

The GloriousBastards could not sustain their week 1 level of production and could do no better than 6th place this week.  Herbert’s final score of 24 pts was decent and in fact higher than his projection but some of it was because of a useless TD with 1 minute left in the game.  A Jones topped Herbert’s score by 1 with 25 pts which was a relief to Bas after seeing AJ Dillon eat into Jones’ workload significantly in week 1.  This week Jones scored twice and had far more rushing yards than Dillon (132 to 61) but one concern remain that Dillon had more carries again (18 to 15).  The biggest difference for Bas between week 1 and 2 were that star WRs Chase and Adams cooled off considerably with only 7.75 pts and 7.5 pts, respectively.  Perhaps it was premature to expect them to have Kupp-esque level of production on a regular basis and it’s the reason why they are not top in the league.  Playing without TJ Watt, the Steelers kept the Pats to only 17 pts but did not get a sack, only created one turnover which was nullified by the Steelers’ own special teams muffing a punt.  Thankfully that lone INT was M Fitzpatrick so Bas could double-benefit again like last week although not the same magnitude.  LB Wagner did equally well as Fitz with 11 pts and Parsons was the best of the lot with 15 pts.

The BeaudoinBrothers disappointed with 7th place this week, very far behind Bas with only 120.25 pts and fell to the middle of the standings.  D Henry scored on MNF and admittedly was playing a good defense, but 13 rushes for 25 yards is not what he used to do, even against top defenses, so one has to wonder if he’s now over the hill.  He ranks RB24 after two weeks and Beaud will not be able to compete at the top if he’s no longer franchise player caliber.  The problems at QB might be equally acute, R Wilson seemed to have been a bargain in the draft in the 6th round but perhaps there was a reason.  The Broncos were playing at home against the Texans so there was no excuse, it took a TD in the 4th quarter for Wilson’s only score of the afternoon and finished with 11.5 pts which will not lead any PQBFL team to glory.  Perhaps backup D Carr will be called into action sooner rather than later but he’s not been overly productive himself either, ranking QB13 so far which is even worse than Wilson at QB10.  In a week with a complete lack of standouts, M Thomas was actually team leader with 14.25 pts and he was not even expected to start, he only did so because Pittman was injured.  It came to within a hair of a rookie LB being Beaud’s top score of the week with Devin Lloyd scoring 14 pts in a rare bright spot.  Mixon and AJ Brown were both subpar with 8.25 pts each and far below expectations, and Kelce was even farther below the mark with 7.5 pts.

The Decepticons finished 8th this week and also fell to 8th place in the standings so now the top 2 teams from 2021 rank bottom 2 in 2022, in a complete reversal of fortunes so far.  Apart from C Kupp, not much went right this week.  Kupp did with Kupp normally does with 11-108-2, beating his already elevated projection with 25.25 pts this week.  Mahomes was not bad this week with 20.75 pts but a shootout with the Chargers was expected and it did not happen, Mahomes finished with 2 TDs but only 235 passing yards.  N Harris is playing injured and was limited to 7.25 pts which is the worst scenario for Dec, not earning injury points and having a poor score from a player who is nearly unbenchable.  Fournette was held in check with only 6 pts despite the win, and at WR2 R Woods was awful with 5.75 pts although backup Lockett showed signs of life with 14.25 pts on the bench with his new QB Geno Smith.  At TE Schultz started the season well in week 1 with a double-digit score but in week 2 he ended in negative territory due to only catching two passes and fumbling one of them.  At DB Dec will have to do without J Adams out for the year which will sting, and backup Kearse also missed this week to injury, leaving AJ Terrell as the only option.  Fortunately he was decent with 10.5 pts but everybody else on defense was below him, notably only 2 pts from J Baker.

Could it be that after only two weeks we already know that there will not be a PQBFL championship repeat?  After not finishing bottom 3 all of 2021, now Prof has done it 2/2 this year and this week was rock bottom with only 93.5 pts and more than 20 pts behind Dec in 8th place.  It would be hard to find positives for Prof this week except perhaps that if the Bills defense had started, Prof would have finished 8th because the Bills scored 26.5 pts on the bench while the starting Browns scored a poor 2.5 pts at home against the lowly Jets.  The only starter who beat its projection was D Swift with 14.25 pts but that’s mostly because he scored on a 22-yard reception; despite the Lions leading all game long, he finished the game with only 5 carries (and 2 receptions) while backup Ja Williams had 12 carries which was disturbing.  LB Brooks matched his projection with 11 pts but every other starter else was below.  First off Burrow was unimpressive in a loss to Dallas with only 1 TD and less than 200 yards passing.  M Evans lost his temper after only scoring 6 pts and got ejected, and now suspended.  B Cooks only scored 6.5 pts to fall to WR26 which seems like an expensive 5th round pick.  But that’s peanuts compared to Pitts: a bottom of the barrel TE who ranks TE19 out of 21, Pitts had 2 receptions for 19 yards this week with only 3 of 25 targets when the Falcons playing from behind.  He’s in the Pitts.  Travis Etienne might be an even bigger catastrophe with only 4.25 pts this week and ROO11 so far, being mightily outrushed by J Robinson (23 carries 64 yds 1 TD) against 9-20-0 for Etienne.  It would be hard to find a worse franchise player, but perhaps that could be Javonte Williams?  RB26 so far, even outscored by backups Pollard (RB18), D Henderson (RB20), and Conner (RB23).  Prof drafted 2022 with too much emphasis on the future and even that might bomb out, the two college WRs drafted by Prof have been poor so far (this week 0.75 pt for Smith-Njigba and 1 pt for Boutte) such that their 2023 NFL draft outlook has already taken a hit.
