Week #2

ProfessorMJ had not finished higher than 4th all of last year and already finished top 3 twice this year by winning for the first time in team history this week, easily distancing Adm and Dec.  Prof took sole possession of first place with an average of 187 pts scored during those first two weeks – a very hot start.  The trade of Tom Brady for an 8/11 draft pick swap is starting to look great for a team which is more in “win now” mode than anticipated, rather than building for the future.  Brady destroyed the Falcons and scored 35.5 pts this week to lead the way for Prof.  At RB the other pre-draft trade D Henderson did well with 11.75 pts but he got injured and that’s always been the problem with him because he is injury-prone – exactly why the Rams brought S Michel over and unlike week 1, Michel was used considerably.  On the RB bench, nobody did well for Prof other than Pollard with 17.5 pts but he remains stuck behind Elliott.  Prof’s WRs were nothing special this week with only 14.5 pts combined from Ty Hill and K Allen but it was not necessary because the defense was stellar.  The main play was R Smith’s long TD on an INT return for a TD which double-counted because Prof also started the Bears D.  The rest of the defense also contributed with Rapp, J Brooks, and Burns all scoring between 9 and 11 pts each.

The Admirals were headed to an average week but made a strong push on MNF to finish second thanks to Aaron Jones’s big night of 4 TDs on top of D Adams who caught 8 balls for 121 yards.  K Murray did even better than A Jones with 34.75 pts and is the highest scoring player in the PQBFL so far in front of Mahomes.  Adm started Mike Williams due to Jeudy’s injury and he had a nice game with 17.5 pts, much better than his teammate K Allen (Prof).  Adm could have finished first but defense was not as dominant as Prof’s defense.  D Hunter had a big game with 3 sacks and 19 pts, but the WFT team defense was disappointing by almost losing to the Giants and only scored 2 pts.  Also J Bosa (3 pts) and K Byard (4 pts) had quiet games.  Rookie J Waddle did not score a TD in week 2 unlike in week 1 but he nonetheless caught 6 passes to remain involved in the Dolphins offense despite a horrible offensive day and shutout against the Bills.  Adm’s rookie RBs on the bench Carter and Gainwell did not score but Carter was the better of the two with a decent effort against the Pats so he might have some value later this year.

The Decepticons finished third with an excellent 169 pts this week, led by their franchise QB Mahomes who scored 33 pts in a losing effort against the Ravens.  WR Lockett scored on another bomb this week for 24.75 pts and after two weeks he’s the second best WR in the PQBFL behind C Kupp, also on Dec’s roster, but he has not even seen the field yet because Dec’s WR1 is D Hopkins who is hard to bench and scored 12.5 pts this week.  The way things are trending, Dec might have the top WR trio in the PQBFL by far and would be able to survive injuries and bye weeks at that position without any problem.  Last week N Fant was benched in favor of Everett and Everett scored a TD, this week it was Fant who started and he scored a TD and a total of 11.5 pts.  Defense was ok but not great for Dec this week with N Bosa being the only one to reach double digits while the Rams, D Leonard, D Adams, and J Baker all slightly underperformed their weekly projections.  Rookie N Harris had another rough outing with less than 4 yards per carry but at least this week he scored on a 25-yard reception to end the day with a respectable 13.75 pts.  We should also note the oversized contribution from COL QB Corral who had a huge game of 7 TDs.

FlyingElvis scored a strong 163.5 pts which was good for 4th place this week.  Like the top 3 teams, FE’s team leader was its QB but it started on the wrong foot with L Jackson having 0 TD and 2 INTs at halftime but a great comeback of 3 TDs in the second half was enough to edge the BeaudoinBrothers.  Jackson did not do it all by himself, actually FE was put in decent position (before Jackson’s SNF game) with an eye popping 25 pts from B Wagner who had 16 tackles 4 assists in addition to a sack in a losing effort against the Titans.  The Pats defense was also dominant with 19 pts by holding the Jets to only 6 pts and caused 4 turnovers plus 4 sacks as well.  FE’s WRs were average with 24.25 pts from JJSS and Thielen combined, which was a bit better than their projection but not by much.  Ekeler was also ok but not great with 11.5 pts, the problem was more about franchise player J Taylor who was limited to 4.25 pts against the Rams and was uninvolved in the passing game with only 1 reception for 2 yards.  More will be needed of him for FE to compete at the top – he ranks RB25 so far which is not going to cut it.

The BeaudoinBrothers finished in the middle of the pack despite a decent score of 158.75 pts but there were too many underperformers on the team this week to finish near the top.  WR A Cooper had a huge week 1 but he followed up with a dud with only 3-24 pts to crash back to earth.  However the main black mark was rookie Z Wilson who also had a good week 1 with 19.5 pts but he was atrocious this week with 4 INTs and no TD to finish in negative territory – he single handedly doomed the Bros for the week.  That erased a massive day for franchise player D Henry who showed that his week 1 bad game was simply a speed bump; this week he exploded for 182 rushing yards and 3 TDs, but on top of it he caught 6 passes for 55 yards despite being historically not much of a receiver out of the backfield.  R Wilson and C Carson each scored 2 TDs to boost the Bros’ TD total while Ridley and Kelce added one each and even the Colts defense scored a TD.  The Bros were letdown by the rest of their defense, LB D Bush was a late injury and the coach made the mistake of starting M Garrett at defensive flex rather than a LB and Garrett did not get a sack in his juicy matchup vs the Texans and both LBs on the bench L David and L Wilson doubled Garrett’s score.  The other DL Chandler Jones also cooled off after 5 sacks in week 1 – he was held off the scoring sheet except for 3 QB hits but no tackle.

The Ballers scored an above-average 151.5 pts but unfortunately it was no better than 6th place this week.  The Ballers finished 7.25 pts behind Beaud in 5th place and perhaps the result could have been different if college QB Kedon Slovis did not get injured early in the game before he could even score a point – he finished with a goose egg.  Thankfully Slovis’ injury is minor but it shows the danger of drafting only one college player.  Rookie Mac Jones is a key reason why Ball did not finish in the top half of the standings – the Pats QB played conservative and did not score a TD nor did he turn the ball over for a meagre total of 4.5 pts, leaving Micah Parsons on the bench as a last minute lineup switch; Parsons scored 9 pts, which by itself was not enough to change the standings but it could have if combined with starting decisions at other positions.  For example, an argument could be made that Kendricks could have started instead of Shaq Thompson and Kendricks scored 12 pts on the bench vs 5 pts for Thompson, or DB Abrams (9 pts) on the bench vs starter Jenkins who was limited to 6 pts.  The Ballers tried a late comeback like Adm and FE with A Rodgers scoring 4 TDs on MNF but came up short – he need more than 32 pts, however it was nice to see him bounce back after his horrible week 1 performance.  The bigger concern is D Cook who scored 12.25 pts but got banged up and it may affect him in week 3 and going forward.  Barkley remains limited as expected but his number of touches went up to 15 which is a positive sign although this week was a drag again with only 5.75 pts.

The GloriousBastards are not having the best of starts with 5th place last week followed by 7th place this week but the issue is how bad the team performed – finishing way behind Ball with only 115.5 pts for GB.  Every single offensive player underperformed relative to the weekly projections except for rookie J Chase who barely did so with 12.5 pts vs a projection in the range of 11.0-11.5 pts.  Everybody else was below, even the kicker Succop who missed an extra point.  The normally productive Waller was taken out by the Steelers defense so Carr instead threw to other receivers and only 5 of Carr’s 28 completions went to Waller which is unusual and even one of the two 2 TDs was to the backup TE Moreau, a slap in Bas’ face.  The player the closest to his projection was CD Lamb with 12.5 pts which is not bad but the rest left to be desired with 12.25 pts from Ju Herbert who is not looking like the 2020 version so far and RB Gibson who could not capitalize on an easy matchup and only scored 6 pts.  Swift barely did better with 6.5 pts, this time the Lions playing from behind did not help him all that much because he caught 4 passes and no TD.  Bas’ top score of the week was the Denver defense which is not a good sign, and even their game was not that fantastic, no TD, 2 turnovers, 1 sack, nothing more.  The good news is that they held the Jaguars under 200 yards of total offense so it gave the Broncos good field position all game, but the Broncos special team nonetheless allowed a big play with a kickoff return for a TD.

WaxOnWaxOff finished in 8th place for the second straight week and now occupies the basement of the standings in what could hardly be a worse season start with injuries and lack of performance by healthy players.  Josh Allen had an easier matchup this week but he still came up almost 10 pts short of his projection with 15.5 pts.  The one who did underperform by 10+ was Kamara with a dreadful 8 rushes for 5 yards and he was not that involved via the air either with 4 short receptions.  He even got outscored by Chase Edmonds who was Wax’s RB2 this week, we cannot expect miracles from him and 6.25 pts was all he could produce even with the Cards scoring 34 on the Vikings.  Receivers were better with 15.25 pts from J Jefferson, 11 pts from D Samuel, and emerging star Hockenson who scored 16.25 pts and could arguably finish top 2-3 TE this season, one of the few bright spots for Wax.  The rookie position for Wax is a mess, the GM paid up for Trey Lance and who knows when he will play with the 49ers sitting at 2-0, Sermon was a healthy scratch week 1 and got concussed in week 2, which leaves Elijah Moore the Jets rookie WR who did borderline ok with 4-47 this week.  He was on the bench for Wax but sounds like he’ll have to start as early as week 3.  Even defense was a let down for Wax this week with the Steelers only scoring 1 point against the Raiders, and DL Chase Young who started with Aaron Donald on the bench and Young only scored 4 pts against the Giants with Donald’s 11 pts being wasted on the bench.

OldNo7 had a decent week 1 with 4th place but crashed to last place this week to drop to 7th in the standings.  In a week with so many big scores at the QB position, Dak Prescott won the game but no TD and only 4.25 pt all but killed Old’s chances.  McCaffrey was his usual self and the top scorer for Old with 17.25 pts but co-starting RB CEH was limited to 46 rushing yards, he was not even targeted once in the passing game (is that not supposed to be his strength?) and he lost a fumble in Ravens’ territory with less than 2 minutes left when Butker was getting ready to give the Chiefs the game-winning FG so CEH sunk the Chiefs all by himself with his blunder.  AJ Brown was also subpar with only 5 pts because the Titans did most of the scoring on the ground and rookie DeVonta Smith was quiet with 2-16 against a top defense (49ers) unlike week 1 when he scored against the Falcons.  At least those same 49ers produced a double-digit score for Old this week with 11 pts but they would have needed at least a couple of turnovers to beat Wax and avoid last place; they did not create any against the Eagles.
