Week #6

The BeaudoinBrothers crushed WaxOnWaxOff by more than 45 points but it was only good for one rank-point this week.  As was shown by the Decepticons in week #10 last year when the team scored a gargantuan 238.5 pts, while big wins can be impressive, they can be quickly forgotten when they are not followed by more success in subsequent weeks because the ‘Cons never returned to the top 2 in the following 7 weeks and finished the season in third place because of it.  This week, D Henry had a huge game with 35 pts and was the reason the Titans could beat the Texans in overtime, but all that scoring would be more useful in closer weeks for Beaud.  R Wilson was on bye but the scheduling gods smiled on the Bros with K Murray playing the porous Cowboys defense and he scored 30.25 pts.  Defense was also strong for Beaud with double-digit scores from JJIII and the duo of Bucs LBs D White and L David, while the laggard was M Garrett who was not bad either with 8 pts thanks to another game with a sack.  The mild concern this week was whether the Cowboys receivers can continue their high output with Dalton.  Rookie Lamb scored 10 pts which is not as good as his average scoring with Prescott but decent for rookie standards (would be equivalent to ROO6), and A Cooper scored 16.75 pts on the bench mostly in garbage time while the Bros started newly acquired AJ Brown instead to be safe, and Brown scored 17.75 pts.  Since the Cowboys are expected to have garbage time and trailing from behind in many games, perhaps the downgrade from Prescott will not be hugely material.

With Kamara on bye and WaxOnWaxOff only having one active RB, Wax was happy to escape with only a 1 rank-point loss to Beaud and is now 2 rank-points behind in the standings so damage was limited.  Wax would have scored more if not for the intra-game injury to Jonnu Smith (final score 1.5 pt) while the replacement TE for the Titans scored very well during his absence which was frustrating for Wax, but it would not have made any difference anyway.  It does not look like Lamar Jackson is finding his groove in the air as his struggles continued, failing to pass for 200 yards for the 4th straight game.  He is simply a RB at this point, albeit a good one with his 108 rushing yards against the subpar Eagles defense which helped him finish the game with 27 pts.  RB Ronald Jones was the sole starting RB for Wax but he handled the scoring for 2 RBs by himself with 2 TDs and over 100 yards for a total of 20 pts.  WR Ridley was affected by the return to health of Ju Jones (Dec) because Ridely no longer had the most targets but the pie was large enough in the Falcons’ trashing of the Vikings that Ridley scored 14.25 pts despite Ju Jones having the upper hand.  Individual defense was weak notably A Donald had a rare off game with only 3 pts but the Steelers destroyed the Browns and scored a TD for a total of 20.5 pts.  This moved the Steelers to DEF3 in the PQBFL behind the Colts (Old) and the Ravens (Beaud).

The Admirals were headed for a so-so week but DB B Baker was dominant on MNF with one sack, one INT, and one forced fumble for a total of 20 pts to help Adm finish in 3rd place.  Baker recaptured the top spot as highest scoring DB in the PQBFL in front of J Adams (Dec) for points per game.  D Watson had a slow season start but since coach O’Brien was fired he had his best two games of the season, 29.75 pts in week #5 and now this week Watson almost beat the Titans with 36 pts.  Similarly to Wax, Adm had to deal with an incomplete lineup because both Bosa and Crosby were on bye and D Hunter has yet to play a game this season at DL.  Adm could have beat Wax if A Jones had a better game than only 8.25 pts and RB2 Ingram is seeing a declining number of carries, this time he was only 5-20 for 1.5 pt which is barely better than no RB at all.  Adm’s star WRs were also not on their A-game with 9 pts from D Adams and 11.5 pts from Thielen.  Rookie Gibson is struggling to get the bulk of carries in Washington as teammate McKissic is refusing to go away; Gibson was limited to 4.5 pts.  However the good news is that backup rookie J Jefferson exploded for 33.25 pts on the bench so Adm’s coach might make a starter switch sooner rather than later.

The Decepticons only scored 115.5 pts but avoided a painful week by escaping with 4th place, only 0.25 pt ahead of FE.  Mahomes was not particularly dominant on MNF but with 22.5 pts he did just enough to edge FE at the finish line.  Dec could have easily finished lower than FE and Bas if not for a freakin’ kicker, Koo making 8 kicks including 4 FGs for 15.5 pts to easily exceed his projection and make a difference of most likely two ranks this week.  At WR the Dec coach benched Ju Jones who was dominant with 29.75 pts and instead started Godwin who was limited to 7.25 pts, although in the coach’s defense it’s not the easiest thing to do to pick which WR to start when both have been missing games recently so it’s unknown who has recovered and who is still hampered by injury.  At RB, Chubb’s injury was supposed to pave the way to Hunt’s dominance but it has not happened.  Playing the Steelers was part of the reason this week and Hunt only scored 4.75 pts.  At the rookie position, P Queen was quieter than he’s been recently with only 5.5 pts.  He might not return to the starting lineup any time soon with Tua Tago expected to start for the Dolphins after their bye week.  Another guilty party for Dec’s low score this week was the Rams D which allowed one blocked kick and did not create any turnover or sack against the 49ers and finished at -3 pts.

FlyingElvis finished in the middle of the pack with 5th place which was an adequate result given how things started on Sunday with Cousins’ 3 INTs early in the game before he recovered to finish with 25.25 pts which was even higher than his projection of less than 20 pts.  On MNF FE had Singletary and Edmunds going against Mahomes for Dec, Edmunds did his job with 12 pts but Singletary was useless like the rest of the Bills’ offense with only 3.75 pts which doomed FE.  Results at WR were even worse because stars M Evans and JJSS combined for exactly the same score 3.75 pts with only 3 catches for 16 yards between the two of them without a TD which is stunning considering that both the Bucs and the Steelers scored 38 pts in their respective game.  The worst news of the week for FE was M Sanders who not only fumbled near the goal line after a 74-yard run to finish the game at 8.25 pts, but on that same play he hurt his knee and will miss time, on top of Barkley, Ekeler, and Fournette also injured.

The GloriousBastards were in decent position to finish in 3rd place before MNF but Zeke Elliott was abominable on MNF with half a point due to two lost fumbles and Bas fell below Adm, Dec, and FE.  Bas becomes another team this season who follow-up a win with a bad week.  On average this season, the team that finished first had 3.6 rank-points the following week which means between 6th and 7th place.  Bas has now allowed Adm to catch them in the standings in 4th place, 10 rank-points behind first place.  Kittle was the team leader this week with 20.25 pts and he remains the top scoring TE in the PQBFL so far.  The other position where Bas has the best player is rookie but Herbert was on bye so it was expected that Bas might not shine this week.  Backup rookie JK Dobbins had almost double the carries than Ingram (Adm) had, but the bad news is that Gus Edwards had more than Dobbins.  Nevertheless all three Ravens RBs were ineffective and Dobbins finished with only 2.25 pts.  At DL, C Jordan was on bye so backup Ju Houston started.  Prior to week 5 he was more than a serviceable backup with an average of over 7 pts per week but he scored only 2 pts in week 5 and even worse this week he scored a goose egg at the worst possible time given the tight rankings.

OldNo7 failed to reach 100 pts but because week 6 was the lowest scoring week of the season so far, Old’s score was good enough for 7th place.  Old is another team ravaged by injuries at RB, with McCaffrey, Michel, and Gordon all out to injury so Old made a couple of trades which unfortunately ended up not making a difference in the standings.  J White scored 6 pts and Breida was limited to 2.75 pts.  The problem for Old this week was not RB however: A Rodgers sucked big time with only 0.25 pt when his previous season low was 20 pts in week 2.  Receivers were almost equally bad with Ty Hill (4.25 pts), A Robinson (7.5 pts), and Engram (3.5 pts) who all scored roughly half of their projection or worse.  And how about the Colts defense?  The PQBFL’s best defense took the Bengals lightly and allowed 21 pts in the first 15 minutes of the game before tightening up and only allowing two long FGs in the next 45 minutes but they still just finished with 0.5 pt.  The other position where Old has the top player so far is LB where B Martinez continued to tackle everything in sight with 14 more points this week, entirely with tackles and assists (no sack or turnover).  At rookie, CEH had a good game with 14 pts but the recent acquisition of L Bell by the Chiefs was not the most comforting news for CEH with an uncertain outlook for playing time.

The Ballers finished with a season-low of 79.75 pts and a second straight 8th place finish which is a disappointment after the first place in week #4.  Things are unraveling fast for Ball with Prescott injured and backup Newton who threw 2 INTs in a home loss for only 10.5 pts.  D Cook also missed the game due to injury; Mixon was ok with 10.75 pts but the Ballers don’t really have a third startable RBs on the team so Hines was given the nod and he scored 2.25 pts which was below his already quite modest weekly projection.  The one player who has not been having problems this year so far was D Hopkins, in fact prior to this week he had the highest average of the entire PQBFL at WR if we don’t count D Adams (Adm) and J Crowder (Prof) who both missed some time to injury.  However Hopkins only caught two balls in the Cards big win and he dropped to WR5 in the league.  At rookie the coach started Zack Moss who was returning from injury after missing three games but he only scored 0.75 pts while normal starter D Swift was finally benched after a slow start to his NFL career, and he chose this week to emerge with 20.25 pts.  The Ballers were also affected by the bye week of LB Wagner and without much of a backup LB to speak of.  C Holcomb had only scored a single point all year due to injuries, but at least he scored 6 pts this week which was not as bad as feared.

ProfessorMJ revisited last place after avoiding the cellar in weeks #3-5 and averaging a respectable 6th place during that time frame.  The team leader was Josh Allen again but he was almost 10 pts short of his projection with 14.5 pts which will not do anything to help Prof.  RB Conner scored a TD and rushed for over 100 yards, but for RB2 the coach got overly excited about D Cook’s injury by starting Mattison.  It is clear that Mattison is no Cook, and he rushed for 26 yards on 10 carries and only caught one short pass against a weak defense (Falcons).  Meanwhile, starter Drake was benched and had his best game of the year with 21.5 pts which was almost double his previous best week (11 pts).  The situation was similar at WR where all benched WRs (McLaurin, Fuller, and Crowder) scored equal or better than the two starting WRs Kupp and Golladay with Kupp being the most painful with only 3.5 pts.  At TE the situation is a disaster for Prof with all three TEs being active but none of them being able to catch a single ball so starter Gesicki finished with a fat zero and so did Herndon and Sternberger on the bench.  Prior to this week kicker Crosby was the only position where Prof had the top player but Crosby’s opportunities were limited to one FG and one extra-point this week because the Packers offense could not get anything going so without even missing a kick, Crosby fell to K5 in the PQBFL.  At the team defense position given how much the Cowboys suck, Prof must start the Titans every week but this week they finished with -3 pts which was even worse than Dallas at -2 pts.  To finish off with this nightmare of a week, both rookie WRs from the Raiders were on bye and backup Mims has yet to play a snap so Prof got a zero from the rookie position as well.
