Week #1

OldNo7 started 2019 with a bang by crushing the opposition with a 200+ point week and easily beating everybody by more than 40 points.  OldNo7 has been a long suffering franchise, never finishing any better than third place (2002 and 2015) in about twenty years.  Could 2019 be the year that Old can drink champagne?  OldNo7’s lineup looks good and even more so after week #1.  C Wentz led the scoring with 31.5 pts and with the numerous weapons at his disposal, the Eagles might be the mini-Chiefs’ version of the NFC.  Franchise player McCaffrey scored twice with over 200 yards from scrimmage, against the excellent Rams defense to boot.  Old’s starting receivers all did great with over 20 pts each for Hopkins, K Allen, and E Engram.  Even kicker Gostkowski was the top scoring kicker of the week with 14 pts.  If there is only one questionable spot on Old’s lineup it might be at the rookie position where D Montgomery did not do particularly well at home against the Packers with only 3.75 pts.

The BeaudoinBrothers started the year on the right foot with a satisfying second place which was a relief after the mediocre season in 2018.  Franchise player David Johnson is ready to bounce back with the arrival of a new coach and he’s finally being used correctly in the passing game.  Johnson scored 18.25 pts, a total he exceeded only once last year.  Rookie Kyler Murray started the game slow but came on strong in the 4th quarter and finished the game with 22.25 pts.  The Bros might have a problem at the WR position with the never ending saga surrounding crazy bonehead Antonio Brown who was benched in favor of TY Hilton.  The good news is that Hilton did well without Luck and scored twice for 23.25 pts.  On defense the Bros were solid particularly the Ravens who crushed the Dolphins and scored 15 pts.

The Admirals had a decent third place to kick off 2019 with 146 pts, slightly head of expansion team SunshineBoys who scored 142.25 pts.  Adm could have done better if not for the awful performance of Baker Mayfield at home against the so-so Titans defense.  Mayfield threw 3 INTs and the offseason hype around the Browns has all but evaporated in 60 minutes.  Ingram was Adm’s top scorer with 18.75 pts against the Dolphins but we’ll need to see what he can do against better defenses before we can have confidence that he will be a top RB in his new team.  Adm was quite solid on defense this week with 13 pts each from the Vkings and Joey Bosa.  Blake Martinez also scored double digits and the two laggards D Hunter and B Baker were not bad at all with 8 pts each for a total of 53 pts on the defensive side this week for Adm.

The SunshineBoys surprised favorably this week by finishing in the first half of the standings with a competitive effort which resulted in 4th place.  D Watson played well against the Saints on MNF with 34 pts but he came up just short of a big road win.  In that same game, RB L Murray scored a TD which Kamara did not do which was unexpected.  Murray finished the game with 10.75 pts, easily beating his weekly projection.  On defense Sun was excellent with 15 pts from the Packers, 11 pts from Dunlap, and even better was Vander Esch with 17 pts.  The only exception was DB E Jackson who disappointed with only 2 pts.  The rookie position was also difficult this week for Sun with two injured guys, N Fant scored 3 pts on the bench which was better than starter rookie LB G Pratt who only got one assist for a single point.

The GloriousBastards started the year with a very average week, finishing right in the middle of the standings in fifth place with 136.25 pts which coincidentally was also this week’s average of the 9 team scores.  RB Ekeler took maximum advantage of M Gordon’s absence with 31.75 pts thanks to 3 TDs and he will make the Chargers even more reluctant to pay up Gordon so Ekeler might be a starting RB for longer than expected.  With the departure of Antonio Brown, rookie RB Josh Jacobs might be the only weapon on the Raiders offense and he took maximum advantage of his opportunities with 2 TDs and over 100 total yards.  In that same game Bas also had the Broncos defense, which is the only defense that Bas drafted so they are stuck with those chumps.  The Broncos came up flat losing against a bad Raiders team and the Broncos did not even get a single sack or INT, and no forced fumble either.  What are they going to look like against an above average offense?

The Decepticons kicked off 2019 with a wimper, scoring only 124.25 pts and they should consider themselves lucky because they barely beat FE in 7th place.  Dec will need a boost because despite having the best preseason projections of the entire PQBFL, after week 1 it looks quite doubtful whether they remain favorites to repeat as PQBFL champions.  Mahomes was fine as usual with 33.5 pts and Dalvin Cook looks to be a great pick in the second round if the Vikings only attempt 10 passes the entire game as Cousins did in week #1, letting Cook do the damage with 21 pts.  However Dec might have minor problems at WR until AJ Green returns to health.  Evans was a bust in week 1 with only 2 receptions for 28 yards, and Lockett scored a 44 yard TD but unfortunately it was his only reception of the game and he was only targeted twice all game.  This is worrying since he was supposed to be the top WR for the Seahawks following Baldwin’s retirement.  However Dec’s problems were more on the defensive side this week anyway, for example Dec only drafted the Eagles D so it is the same issue as for Bas, if the Eagles underperformed against a subpar offense like the Skins, then what is it going to be against better teams?  The Eagles finished with negative points this week because they did not cause a turnover, they only sacked the QB once, and allowed almost 400 yards of offense to the Skins.  Dec’s highly valued individual defenders mostly sucked this week, LB D Jones scoring only 5 pts, teammate K Neal only 2 pts, and how about JJ Watt being blanked from the scoring sheet completely.

FlyingElvis had good hopes to bounce back from a terrible 2018 but it did not start well this week particularly with A Rodgers scoring below his projection with only 12.25 pts on the opener against the Bears.  This could have been expected so the coaching decision is in the spotlight given that Dak Prescott was benched by FE which ended up being a big mistake because Prescott destroyed the Giants with 40.5 pts.  This coaching call alone was the difference between 3rd place and 7th place – ouch.  Both FE RBs scored double digits with 10.5 pts from Barkley and 14.5 pts from L Bell, which is something that none of FE’s WRs could do, not even those on the bench.  All 5 of FE’s WRs combined for only 31 pts which is the lowest of the PQBFL in week #1 by far.  FE also started the wrong TE with H Henry who was adequate with 7 pts but backup D Walker scored 18.75 pts on the bench.  On defense FE was middling with nobody scoring more than 9.5 pts except for the Pats D which looked solid and scored 12.5 pts.

WaxOnWaxOff was projecting to have an above average team in 2019 but week 1 was very bad with only 105.75 pts and flashbacks of 2011, arguably Wax’s worst season when they finished 7th out of 8 teams with a winning percentage of only 0.319.  Wax only scored a single TD on offense, and it was for none other than Dede Westbrook in garbage time when the game was already out of hand against the Chiefs.  Wax’s best offensive player was actually LB CJ Mosley who scored a TD on an INT return with his new team the Jets.  It is never a good sign when a defensive player is the best offensive player.  Everybody on Wax’s offense besides Westbrook underperformed relative to projections, starting with only 6.5 pts from Roethlisberger, Kamara and Ertz who did not score a TD, and the worst of all Tyreek Hill and rookie Guice both got injured.  There is no sugar coating it, week 1 was bad from all angles for Wax except to help 2020 draft status via upcoming injury points.

The Ballers started 2018 with a stunning first place but the exact opposite happened this year with only 81.25 pts which is lower than the worst score of 2018 for the Ballers (week 11 = 89.75 pts).  Julio Jones and Golladay both scored a short TD but they did not get much yardage, ending the game with only 73 yards total between them.  We could not foresee Ty Hill’s injury but Watkins was on the bench for Ball and he exploded for 39.75 pts which means the Ballers could benefit from Hill’s injury in the next few weeks.  QB Newton was unimpressive in the season opener against the Rams and only scored 2.75 pts due to an INT, a lost fumble, and no TD.  It does not help matters that backup Foles also got injured this week so the Ballers might have to rely on backup Josh Allen if Newton cannot get the job done.  Similar to Foles, first round pick Joe Mixon also got banged up and only scored 1.25 pt before exiting the game which was costly for Ball.  On defense the Bears did well limiting the Packers offense with 11 pts but the four individual defenders for Ball only combined for 17 pts which was the worst in the PQBFL for the starting 4 except for Dec (15.5 pts).
